Soon it shall be...

our HM, a 5 day cruise to Mexico on Carnival!! (We decided on a later HM so we could save our $ and splurge.)I am so excited..I need a break in a major way. I have had so much family drama and job disappointment, I am ready to just be with DH and forget about everything!

I've never been on a cruise--tell me all about it!

Re: Soon it shall be...

  • Yay! how exciting!! I know you will have a blast. Wink

  • Congrats! I love cruising! My friends call me the "cruise queen"! What port will you be departing out of?

    • If you guys plan on doing an excursion(s) book them ahead of time on carnival's website. If you haven't done this already get a Carnival account online set up. Every time you log in it will tell you  how many days you have until your cruise.
      • Also, make sure you do your sail and sign passes online--it expedites check in!
    • You can hand carry on 2 bottles of wine or champagne and not be penalized for it--it's totally legal. We tend to sneak alcohol in our checked suit cases, and if it makes it on--it makes it on... but we recently started doing this on cruises 8,9,10!
    • Drinks can be expensive and they are not included both soda and alcoholic beverages! You can buy a soda card for a flat rate and have unlimited soda during your trip. If you guys plan to do this I suggest you only purchase one card... you can keep going up as much as you want for one price instead of two!
    • You have to pay for parking--it's typically $12-15 a day depending on what port you go out of.
    • You will spend $10 per day per person on a flat gratuities charge; which goes to housekeeping and your serving staff for dinner.
    • No cash is accepted on the boat... everything is paid through your sail and sign card aka. your room key! You can place cash on your account or just save it for when you get to Mexico.
    • Mexico-
      • If you go into jewelry shops and say your thirsty--they will give you a free shot of tequila.... we did this one cruise and made our way down the block  in Cozumel... needless to say we didn't make it to dinner that night!
      • Do not drink any water other than a sealed water bottle... be careful about getting drinks from stands/carts--there ice may not be filtered, and you do not want to be sick!
      • Most of the times you can negotiate prices... taxis, jewelry, souvenirs, etc
      • Carlos-n-Charlie's, Senor Frogs, and Fat Tuesdays are all fun places to hang out during the day or at night.
        • We almost always go to one of them to have chips salsa, and guacamole.
      • Normally the cruise ship will have a midnight Mexican buffet during the night of Mexico--those are always a lot of fun!
Feel free to pick my brain, and if I think of anything else I will let you know.
  • OMG you just totally amped me up! =) I am so freakin excited I cannot WAIT! We are doing a snorkeling excursion on Jeep and then one with a boat. We did our accounts online through Carnival so we are set there, too!

We're leaving from Tampa and we arestaying at the Hampton Inn in Ybor City the night before--there is complimentary port shuttle and the parking is 7$/day! YAY!

Quick question--did you bring your own shampoo/conditioner or does the boat have it? I'm forgetting all of my toiletry list--what is a must? Is it wise to bring Dramamine or SeaBands in case I get seasick? ( I have never been on any sort of boat in my life!)

    TIA!

  • I've never been on a cruise, but we stayed at that Hampton Inn last summer while DH took the bar and celebrated our first anniversary there... it will always be special to me! And they have complimentary breakfast, so I love it even more :)
  • You will spend $10 per day per person on a flat gratuities charge; which goes to housekeeping and your serving staff for dinner.

Beware that this does NOT apply to room service. If you order room service, a tip absolutely will be expected. Trust me on this.

Yes, definitely bring dramamine! As for shampoo and conditioner - I don't remember it the rooms were stocked with it; if so, it wasn't much. Those items are available in the gift shop, but they're very overpriced.

Have a great time! I loved Cozumel and the Mayan ruins especially.
