Family oriented neighborhoods in PDX?

Hello!  I currently live in SoCal but my husband is going up to Portland on Monday for an interview.  I've been doing some preliminary research if we move up there and wanted to know what some of the more family oriented neighborhoods were?  I'm looking for something with a community feel where you actually talk to your neighbors.  Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks!

Re: Family oriented neighborhoods in PDX?

  • so i've only been here about 2 weeks now so take my opinion with a grain of salt because i could just be talking out of my ass....BUT

are you looking for younger (mid 20's - 30's) neighbors, or older neighbors?

i think, but i could be wrong, that if you want younger neighbors to stick to SE and if you want older to try SW....i'm actually in SW (but if we can find a house to accept all 4 of our pets will be moving to sellwood next year)...and our neighbors are a little older...not OLD but older..(they have kids in the teens) ...but they're still really really nice. one thing we've noticed since moving here is that everyone is so nice. seriously...for example we went to the post office and there was a HUGE line, yet the cashier saw that my visa had animals on it and we got in a whole conversation about how great dogs are...it's just so different from what i'm used to in MI.

anyway, i'm sure some of the other ladies here can give you better advice on specific neighborhoods, but so far all of my neighbors are great!

Hi there, I'm butting in, I'm from Portland originally, and now work in LA, and I cannot wait to come back to Portland!

In terms of family-friendly neighborhoods, the area around Reed College is really nice, and seems family-friendly.  I would also check out the NE Portland neighborhood of Irvington.  The area around NE Fremont seems really family-friendly too, on the weekends everyone is out having a great time at the stores, restaurants, etc.

One last tip: check out the Real Estate Section on PortlandMonthlyMag.com  It has a great breakdown called "Neighborhoods by the Numbers."  That might help.

  • Portland is pretty family-friendly by it's very nature. I would suggest looking up Portland Monthly Magazine's "Neighborhood by the Numbers" as well. I believe they post their most recent one on their website.

My husband and I live in Eastmoreland and while we don't have kids, there are lots and lots of families. A public grade school within walking distance that seems to be rated pretty well despite the dire straits our schools constantly seem to be in.

Others I might suggest are: Ladds Addition, Irvington, Mt Tabor, Beaumont, Sellwood, Westmoreland, Belmont and Clinton.

I'm partial to the eastside but I'm sure there are plenty of good neighborhoods on the westside as well.

  • Agree with mrspdxbride06. But I'll also say that it depends on what you can afford. We were priced out of a lot of the nicer neighborhoods in PDX, but we bought in Piedmont (N Portland) and love it. There are lots of families, particularly with small children, and we know a lot of our neighbors. Friends in nearby Arbor Lodge say the same. However I will admit that the schools, particularly the high school (Jefferson) aren't very good, although they are improving. We used to live in King and Alberta Arts, and it wasn't what you want at all.

The west side is nice, too. I used to live in Hillsdale. I loved the area, but people stuck to themselves (at least that was my experience, but I was a single grad student so maybe I was the anti-social one). I think Multnomah Villiage and the West Slope are more friendly, though.
