Why you should never put off seeing a Dentist...
I need 15 fillings. Yeah, FIFTEEN. Serves me right for not seeing a Dentist in several years.
In all fairness, I was an antibiotic baby and have soft teeth AND 6 of my fillings are replacements from when I was younger.
Re: Why you should never put off seeing a Dentist...
I have not been to the dentist in...oh...five years?
Dun dun dun!
yikes
Go....go now! They spent 2 hours scraping the calcium off my teeth, and I brush 2x a day and floss! My mouth hurts, and so does my ego.
With dentistry, it's pay now or pay later...at a much higher cost! Just go!
Wow. I have been wondering when it will be time for me to replace my childhood fillings. I?m sure your dentist just saw dollar signs as he/she was doing your exam.
FWIW, my DD had a ton of antibiotics as an infant (due to surgeries) and she now has 5 cavities and she is only 3.5 yrs old. I was devastated when the dentist told me. I can kind of feel your dental pain right now.
Dh has had a root canal and molar removed, and now he needs a bridge with a hefty price tag...he's the one who warned me the longer I wait the worse it gets.
I can't believe I have to spend over $1000 to get my teeth fixed and that fillings just don't last that long! I thought they were permanent! Yikes!
that was the length of my last lengthy gap between visits. i have bad teeth but not the worst--i ended up replacing 2 silver fillings with the newer ones (which are supposed to last a lot longer. the silver ones supposedly need replacing every 15-20 years or so), 2 new fillings, and i had to do deep cleanings every four months for about a year. so glad that was the extent of the damage. go, starlily and weemo!
this. well, almost. i haven't been in about 3.
MH hadn't gone in like 10+ years, even though I would beg him all the time. He had painful memories of the dentist and I could NOT convince him that there have been major advancements in dental technology that made things less painful these days.
His waiting has cost us SO much $$. His teeth look awesome, but..._shit.
My H had the same issue and I begged and pleaded before our wedding for him to go. Finally a local dentist sent a flier offering free teeth whitening kit if you come in for a cleaning and that was incentive enough since he wanted to whiten his teeth before the wedding.
Not so great was the $400 deep cleaning he needed since he hadnt been in so long and isnt a regular flosser.
According to the Dr recommendation, at my age I'm only supposed to go in for a pap every 3 years. Since I had never had an irregular pap, and still don't, that's what I'll continue to do. It had only been 2 years since my last visit, so it's not like I was being irresponsible.
As far as putting off going to the dentist goes, I've spent the past 10 years paying a fortune towards my other health related issues that I was born with, not ones that came from me neglecting my health. I know I should have gone to the Dentist, and that's why I plan on going every 6 months from this point forward, especially since I now have insurance.
I didn't know there was such an adversion to going to the dentist! Y'all should at least go get checkups every 6 months. Dentists can even see the first signs of heart diseases...and c'mon..it's your teeth! No one wants a messed up grill.
I have never heard of this! I haven't ever had an irregular pap either, but my OBGYN still wants me to come in once a year for an exam. I have seen several OBGYNs over the years and they have all had the same policy, regardless of my age.
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
Maybe this is a Kaiser thing? I certainly would not mind going in for one every year, since it takes all of 5 minutes.
Maybe I'm just one to err on the side of caution but given all of your medical issues, I would still go in at least once a year. Even if I had to pay for it out of pocket, it would still be better than dealing with all the aftermath and cost associated with it.

Kaiser does blow. Luckily, I'm really happy with all of my Dr's besides my primary Physician. It's nice being able to get everything done in one place but waiting in looong lines, paying for parking, and the lack of professionalism of their staff is horrible. I've learned that with Kaiser, I end up having to go elsewhere as a cash paying patient for lots of things. At least my rounds of expensive blood testing have been covered.
I wish MH's employer offered other coverage, but sadly they don't. At least the policy is fairly cheap. There's no way I would pay more than $150 per month for them.
I'm so paranoid about my teeth, I go whenever I have the least bit of pain. I went last week only to find out I was having tooth pain because of sinus pressure - WTF?
I also asked my ob/gyn about the 3 year thing and she wasn't on board...
Regarding the every 3-years pap recommendation, it is definitely a Kaiser thing if you have no abnormal screenings. However, they will endlessly hound you with mail and phone calls if you are overdue for it.
Kaiser gets a lot of hate, but I've equally bad if not worse stories from my friends that use other HMOs & PPOs. I personally haven't had any bad experiences with them, so I'll keep going.
