Moving to LA
I'm relocating in a few weeks from the Midwest and would like to hear people's opinions on what neighborhoods to look in for apartments. I've gotten such mixed feedback so far. I'm young, single, business professional, very active and social. I'm flexible as far as commuting to work but I want to stay fairly central. Obviously looking for safety, but would also like to have conviences nearby (it's going to be an adjustment from lots of public transportation to driving everywhere). And cost is a consideration, a studio or 1 bedroom for under $1500 would be ideal.

We live in Pasadena and it's a really nice bedroom community, with lots of apartment living style options. It has public transportation to downtown LA, lots of great restaurants and bars, parks, etc.
However, you sound like a hip swinging single, I bet you'd be happier in a beach town like Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach. There's got to be some other opinions on this board. Come on out, ladies!
If I were single, active, and social, I'd love to live in Hollywood, West Hollywood, Silver Lake, or Los Feliz.
Another option is Downtown, where I do live -- the most central place of all. These are all great places for people who like to have a good time and don't have kids.
You really need to know where you are working first to live somewhat in the radius or your life with a commute can become miserable -- I promise. There is nothing like traffic until you move to LA.
With that being said, we started out in Studio City and LOVED it -- central, just on the other side of the hill from BH and Hollywood. Lots of cute bars and fun shops and places to eat.
I'd also add the Mid-Wilshire area and Santa Monica. Those areas and West Hollywood have lots of walk-friendly options.
Glendale (between Pasadena and Burbank) has the top rated public schools in the LA area, especially if you stay in North Glendale or the la Canada/La Crescenta area. The rents are still reasonable, I just helped a friend of mine move into a 2 bedroom/2 bath for $1475. It might be a bit of a commute if you work on the westside, but the money you will save on private schools and rent should make up for that.
