Question from a Chicago Nestie

Hi ladies!

My husband and I were talking today, and got the idea in mind that we might like to move to Indianapolis some day.  I'm about to take the Illinois bar exam, and he will be graduating from law school in 2 years, so we'd both need to get attorney jobs.  Does anyone know what the legal market in the city is like or projections for the next 2-3 years?  Also, how open is the market to a regional Chicago law school graduate?  Any idea about starting salaries?  Thanks!  I'm not sure where else to look for this information.

Re: Question from a Chicago Nestie

  • Hi!

DH and I lived in Indianapolis before he went to law school at Valparaiso, so let me tell you that we love the city a lot! It has a lot of fun things to do, great restaurants, sports--pretty much anything you can do in Chicago! It also is MUCH easier to get around, and the cost of living is of course much less.

As far as the legal community, there plenty of large firms (50+ attys) along with hundreds of smaller firms. I'll be honest--and I'm sure you know this, if you were in the top 10% or 25% most of the bigger firms will gladly look at your resume. DH graduated a year ago, and interviewed with several firms, before we decided that Fort Wayne was the perfect place for us. He has been in practice here for a year. Of course the job market is very tough for all attorneys right now--but hopefully in 2-3 years it will have rebounded.

DH also points out that Indy is a lot like a big small town--networking, any kind that you can do is a huge plus. As far as a realistic starting salary, for a smaller firm you could expect to start at $60K. For one of the big firms, $80-100K should be expected--but they will also work you for it.

I hope this information is helpful--as I said before, we LOVE Indy and think it is a great place to live--as far as legal practice, it has a lot of advantages--if I can be more help, please let me know! Good luck on the bar!!

  • I have nothing on the law front but we recently relocated to Indy (within the last 7months) and love it.  We had been wanting to relocate and always liked Indy and have found it to be such a great fit, there are tons of big city amenities but it does not feel like a huge city.  I grew up in the Suburbs of Chicago and was at first slightly hesitant about Indy, because it never felt like a big city, but as we visited friends here I really grew to like it.  Now that I am here it has been great and I love the city as we explore new restaurants and areas.

  • Page IU_Baby on the Indiana Bump board. (I think that is her new screenname - it used to be iugal)

I believe she is an attorney and at one point lived in Chicagoland and then moved to Indy.

Move along, nothing to see here.....
  • I don't have any insight on the legal front, but I moved here a year and 3 months ago from the North Side of Chicago.  It is a huge adjustment.  It is a nice place to live and so far I enjoy it, there are just a ton of things you have to get use to not having access too.  It is much less expensive to live here, that is for sure.  So I guess it is a trade off, give up some things for the lower cost of living.  Oh and compared to the city, there is no traffic hereSmile
  • Thanks for all of the information, ladies!  I really appreciate hearing from people who actually live in the area.  Now I just need to wait for DH to graduate, so we can make the move Smile  Everyone over here seems so nice and friendly.  Hopefully I can join your ranks eventually!
