Name Changing--help!

Hi ladies,

So we had so much going on after our wedding I never changed my name. Professionally I go by what I want to change my name to but have yet to do it legally. I want to go ahead and start the process but need advice--do I really need to get a name changing kit, is there a website that explains the process?

Re: Name Changing--help!

  • 1. Go to the courthouse of the county where you got married and get a copy of the Abstract of Marriage (in Franklin County in 2005 it cost $2 and was a green sheet of paper).

    2. Go to the Social Security office and let them know you need to change your name.  They will do the work and give you a temporary print out until your new card comes in the mail.

    3. Go to the BMV to change your license and registration.  Beware though, they retake your picture (I didn't know that and looked like s**t).

    4. Call your credit cards, magazine subscriptions, insurance companies, banks, etc. and let them know of the change.  Some may require a copy of your Abstract of Marriage (from the courthouse).  Others will just ask you a series of identifying questions and make the change for you over the phone.

  • I didn't know they were going to retake my pic either and mine looks awful too!!  Glad I wasn't the only one who didn't know that!!!

  • Long time no see, congrats on the baby...looks like we were on the same schedule. :)  Come visit us at the new board.
