Visiting Chicago in September

Hi Ladies, the hubs and I are heading to Chicago for my 30th in late September. I would love some ideas of things we should do/see while there.

When you have OOT guests what kind of fun/touristy things do you take them to do? Anything (restaurant/attraction/neighborhood) we shouldn't miss?

TIA!

Re: Visiting Chicago in September

  • have you ever been before? how long are you staying? Try getting tickets to a Cubs game if there is one that weekend.  Stubhub.com.  That is a great Chicago experience.  As far as touristy things, I always recommend the double decker bus tour.  you get to see so much of the city and the tour guides are great, plus you can hop on and off all day.  start early to get your money's worth.  Other's like the architecture boat tour which goes along the river...the bus allows you to see more, but the boat tour comes highly recommended.  Navy Pier is neat if you like real touristy things.  Also go up to the Signature Room for a drink at the top of the Hancock Tower.  It is free to get up, and a drink will run you $7-14ish, which is cheaper than paying to go to the observation deck.  Check out Millineum Park and the "Bean" (aka Cloud Gate).  The museum campus is nice if you are into museums.  You can buy city passes that get you into multiple places that would otherwise cost you more a la carte.  I could ramble forever...just depends what kinds of things you are into and how long you are here.  hope you have a nice time!

Check metromix.com to see if any events or festivals are going on when you are here.

  • no, we've never been. We'll be there 5 nights/4 days total.

We're total foodies, so I think we're going to do a tour I heard about called Chicago Food Planet. But we're open to anything. Thank you so much for the awesome feedback!

  • also, if you like comedy, check out Second City.  Get tix in advance if you want to see a show though, they sell out.  Greektown is fun if you're looking for great Greek food.  Lawry's Prime Rib is great, and Weber Grill is a great place to eat casually.  Billy Goat Tavern is a unique Chicago experience, if you are familiar with the SNL skit.  Other than that, your tour will show you all the good stuff.

  • Lots of museums if you are into that - Art Institute, Field, Science & Industry, Contemporary Art, Chicago History. There's also Shedd Aquarium, Garfield Park Conservatory, etc.

Food favorites - MK, Landmark, Topolobampo, Blackbird, Wildfire, Brasserie Jo and I've been wanting to try Publican

I agree that drinks at the top of the Hancock are cool,  just make sure you don't eat at the Signature Room. It's expensive and kinda sucks :P

They just added alcoves (or whatever you call them) - these clear glass things the jut out from the Sears Tower that allow you to see straight down. Looks pretty cool but I haven't  had a chance to go (the line was SO long the day I went).

Catch a Cubs game if you can.

Check out  metromix.com to see if there are any festivals/events that will be around when you're in town.

  • Are you staying downtown? Are you open to taking a cab a little north to see some of the neighborhoods? Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, Lakeview pretty much have everything you need for a full day's activities.

I use this site for everything, street fests, restaurants, music, comedy shows

  • How about nice Hotels to stay at?

My husband and I are thinking about booking a trip out to Chicago for our anniversary as well.  We've never been (we're from Boston) and have just started looking into some things.  Anybody know anything about The Wit Hotel?

    TIA!
