Previous homeowner aggravation

I bought my place over a year ago and it went into foreclosure for 6 months before that so it's been a total of 2 years since the previous homeowner lived there.  However, I am still getting mail for her and the slew of people she housed or whatever she did with them.  She was Hispanic and all the mail I get is for other Hispanics (maybe 6-9 different people!).  At first I was good and wrote return to sender, addressee moved, but those businesses NEVER corrected their information.  Then I started calling those businesses and even with that some places still didn't get it right.

I've received bank statements, social security stuff, car loan information, slews of magazines, and the latest are letters from doctor's offices which I assume are new bills since I've never received mail from these places before.  Oh, yeah, and I of course do not open these since that is illegal but it doesn't take much to piece things together.  I quickly realized these people don't want anyone to find them because I started receiving court orders on my door and even had the deputy sheriff stop by one day to serve more papers.  Grr... One of the court orders was for a car loan which I knew the woman had purchased after she lost the house because her son lives on the same street as I do and I watched her drive by and within a month of me moving in she was driving a brand new vehicle!  (Oh, and she stopped by my house one day which is why I now know who she is).

The most aggravating thing is this woman and whoever stayed with her obviously are still using my address for new bills so they don't have to pay.  It's quite aggravating.  As far as I know, there is nothing I can do but continue sending correspondance back.  Anyone know of what can be done to stop these people from getting away with this?

Re: Previous homeowner aggravation

  • I'm sure it'd be a huge PITA, but could you get the phone numbers for the places, like the doctors, banks, etc and call them to say she doesn't live there?  Or you could get a PO box and remove the mailbox, then it'd get sent back automatically haha.  That'd probably be more of a pain though..  Our sellers took their dear sweet time changing their address, so I was taking their mail to the post office constantly.  The post man said to write "Doesn't live here" on the envelope and mark "Return to sender" and I did that and knock on wood, we haven't gotten anything since.  Did you tell the sherriff what was going on?  That's gotta suck, I'm sorry.  I hope it stops.

  • Maybe try going to the post office and submitting a change of address form for her new address (if you can find it)?  Unless you have to sign it - I can't remember if it requires a signature or not.  Or, forward the mail to her son's address.

We still get mail for the previous owners of our house and we moved in four years ago.  It's a PITA, but we just write "return to sender" on them.

  • I wish writing "Return to Sender" was that easy.  Some of the ones I did that for are the ones I found a court order waiting on my door weeks later.  I really wish there was just a way an alert could be made on this woman and all the others she let use her address.  I hate that she's using my address to get away with not paying her bills.

Chase is awful at this!  I sent back 2 different people's mail to them following the correct mail protocol for 6 months straight, called them, and I still get mail from them.

  • Next court order call the municipality to report a fraduelnt address. It takes your time but for some things- like the court orders, its illegal if she's opening future accounts listing that address.

  • If you know what house is her son's then fill out the change of address form for there.

In all seriousness, I would fill the fradulent address claim.

  • To file the fraudulent address claim, then, do I just call the municipal or does that only work when a court order is delivered?  I've never heard of this and know nothing about it.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
  • Well I went to the municipal court's public files and discovered one of them was pulled over in January of this year and the address used was mine!  Of course, it and his other ticket are both outstanding and consist of no license, intoxicated, among other things.  I'm looking for some kind of form to file but I don't see anything.
  • Ditto fwd all the mail to the sons address on the same street. i would have also pointed that sheriff in that direction too.

  • thankfully we haven't received any of the previous owners mail. but i would contact the post office and tell them that nobody by that name lives there anymore.  if it continues i would just take the mail back once a month and i think eventually they maybe more willing to help you out.

  • I'm sorry i didn't respond sooner. Go to the police station and file a report against them for fradulant information. Also, ask the police who you can supply the new address to as you want your address cleared. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
