Re: dosha salons?

  • Never been, but hear good things.

  • Honestly... I haven't heard good things.  But only from stylists that used to work there that were unhappy, and people that were unhappy with their spa downtown. I haven't heard anything specifically about hairstylists doing a bad job.

  • Have you looked on yelp?  They get mixed reviews and it looks like it partially depends on location.  When I was looking it was one of the salons I was considering since I wanted an Aveda salon.  I like the one I ended up with (New Beginnings), but one of the things I like a lot is they aren't too far from where I live.  There's an Aveda Institute in downtown where you can get your hair done by those training to be Aveda stylists at a large discount.  I considered going that route but ended up just wanting a haircut in a hurry and not have to worry about the outcome!

  • ahhhhh shoot. i made an appt for tomorrow because i really want my hair done this week and it seems to be my only available time right now....i wanted to go to new beginnings but it's over 15 miles from my house...just seems silly to drive so far =( i was going to go to the bridgeport location...i only see one review so far on yelp for that specific location and it's not good. i might look around and see if there are any other aveda salons closer and look up reviews on them

  • oh ps sleepyocean i loooooove aveda institutes (the schools)....that's the only place i went when i went to michigan state...always left with a great haicut for like 25 bucks and you couldn't tip...i have had color done there before but it takes HOURS because they're learning and then you have to have their supervisor come check on you multiple times and what not....once i had my whole head dyed platinum blonde and i was there 6 hours....looked awesome as hell but it just took forever. i really dont feel like spending all day there tomorrow otherwise i'd totally go there! (thanks for letting me know, i totally didnt know portland had one!!!)

  • Blah. I feel like you're paying for the facilities (which, admittedly, are wonderful). The services, on the other hand, are pretty weak. I have heard that they typically hire newer stylists, etc who are right out of school and that they make them sign agreements stating that they (the stylists, etc) won't work anywhere else within a 25 mile radius (even if they quit working for Dosha) or something of the sort. I've heard lots and lots of bad stories about how they treat their employees.
  • Ditto hearing that they treat their employees very poorly. I've heard it from current and past stylists.

I went twice though, when I first moved here. I didn't want to because of their reputation, but I did because two people recommended their (different) stylists and I was desperate. One haircut was okay, one was terrible, and the eyebrow wax was awful (they basically didn't take anything and the area was so dark I couldn't tell until I got home).

The salons themselves are pretty though, and they have convenient hours.
