Moving to NYC!

Hi everyone-

We're moving to New York City in a few weeks. I'm really excited but a little concerned about where we're going to live. Can you recommend good neighborhoods in Brooklyn? We'd like 2 bedrooms and can't afford insane rent. I'll be working in Manhattan. I've heard good things about Park Slope -- what's the rent like there?

TIA!

Re: Moving to NYC!

  • Park Slope is a great neighborhood - but i'm not sure what you consider insane rent. 2bd can be anywhere from 1700 - 2500+++

  • Thanks. I would say our max is 1800. Anything more than that is probably insane for our budget right now. But do you think that's totally doable in Park Slope -- or would we just be lucky to find something in that range?
  • I think you would be lucky to find a decent 2 bedroom for $1800 in Park Slope.  You could check out Park Slope South, Windsor Terrace (still hard to find a decent 2 bedroom for that price) but you could definitely find a good 2 bedroom in Kensington or Sunset Park.  Start looking on Craigslist and type in the different neighborhoods to get an idea of what's out there.

  • It is possible to find 2bd for 1800 - but you have to seriously look - weed out the scams/bad apts. use the search max/min and the specific neighborhood in craigslist to refine your search. You don't want to find the apt of your dreams listed for 2500!

But definitely check out sunset park, south park slope, kensignton, windsor terrace. good luck!!

  • I think you would be more than lucky finding a cheap 2 BR in Park Slope.  Chances are that if a 2BR is that cheap, it probably means that it's not going to be nice.  There are many nice neighborhoods that are less expensive where you could find an apartment in that price range.

Brooklyn: (in addition to ones listed above) Fort Greene

    Queens: Astoria, Sunnyside, Forest Hills

  • ditto amy on queens?

our 2 BR in forest hills is under $1800/month?

i lived in astoria for seven years - very close to the city, always a lot going on. sunnyside is also a nice area. for us, being close to the train, grocery store, some good restaurants, etc... in our neighborhood was really important which is what we've liked about living in fo hi (and astoria).?

  • I'm in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and i love it! My exact neighborhood leaves a little something to be desired, but a few blocks north or a few blocks south have more. I'm right near the 36th Street subway stop for the N/D/M/R. We have a 2br, with the bedrooms being a bit smaller than i'd like...but we have a W/D, ~15ft ceilings in the front, 5 skylights, exposed brick and awesome landlords for $1600/month. Big Smile

I've only been to Kensington once, but it definitely has a more family/neighborhood-y feel and it's nice and near subways as well.

    GL!

  • Thanks for the suggestions! We'll definitely check out all those places. Luckily, I think we can take our time searching because we have a couple places to stay short-term so hopefully we'll find something really good.

(I won't be a near a computer all day, so if anyone else leaves suggestions - thanking you in advance!)

  • $1800 for a 2Br in Park Slope = good luck!!!
  • I can't help but I wanted to say hi, welcome, and GL with the search!

  • thanks for the advice ladies (and thanks for the welcome nova). looks like park slope is out unless we get super lucky (kind of what i figured), but i'm sure we'll find something great in one of those other neighborhoods.
