Possibly moving to MN/WI area

Hi ladies! My DH and I want to move out of state and are considering the Minnesota/Wisconsin area. I am not familar with the area at but have heard good things about it. I would certainly appreciate any advice, recommendations you can offer in terms of neighborhoods and the area in general. We are looking for a nice family friendly area in a good school district. One thing that does concern me a bit is the bitter cold weather in the winter. Is it really that bad? How much snow do you get? And for those with allergies is the air quality helpful for your allergies or not so much? Thanks so much!

Re: Possibly moving to MN/WI area

  • MN and WI are two whole states that cover everything from an hour north of Chicago to the Canadian border.  Do you have some specific areas you're considering?  A particular kind of job you and/or DH is looking for?
  • Ditto PP. Its easier to give you specifics if we know more of an area that you are looking at. Even the climate/weather can be drastically different.

  • In Wisconsin I have a couple of areas I would recommend:

Madison is great.  It is a larger city with a small town feel.  You have access to pretty much everything and it is a very safe larger city.  It has a grass-roots type of feel to it.

Just outside of Madison is Middleton, WI.  It frequently is ranked one of the top ten places to live in the US, especially for kids.  They have great schools and it is just a hop away from Madison.

Further east is Lake Geneva, WI.  It is nice because it is central to Madison, Chicago, and Milwaukee.  I currently live in Lake Geneva.  It is a popular tourist destination for people from IL obviously because of the lake. So summers can get a little crowded.  They have a great school that is highly known for their music and arts program.

Towards Milwaukee I would suggest to look at Wauwatosa.  It is just outside of Milwaukee and again has the small town feel but has access to pretty much everything.

Greendale, WI is also just outside of Milwaukee and has the same feel as Wauwatosa.

I have allergies and during farming season I do get a little irritated but it is uncontrollable.  The weather / snow isn't too bad, however I have lived in the midwest my entire life so I might just be used to it.  Usually workplaces and schools are pretty flexible with weather - if it is too cold or too much snow, my employers have always let me work from home or take the day off to be safe.

Hopefully that will give you a start :)
