Prepaid phone or sim card for UK?
We're taking a trip to the UK and will need a cell phone. Does anyone have experience with buying a pay as you go cell phone? We've also read about buying a sim card to go in our existing phone. I'm not sure which option is better, or cheaper. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Thanks!
Re: Prepaid phone or sim card for UK?
If you have an unlocked GSM phone it's probably cheaper to just get a SIM card. You can get them online and have it shipped to your house. If you don't have an unlocked GSM phone it shouldn't be very expensive to buy a pay-as-you-go phone in Tesco or a store like it once you get there.
You can also buy pay as you go sim cards overseas, including major grocery stores. Still, I would get one at home just to be sure it works- assuming I really REALLY need it. If it was that important then I wouldn't want to chance it, or have to live without service from the time I land to the time I get around to buying one.
But check your phone first. If your phone physically won't work, no sim card in the world will make a bit of difference....
You will need to have a tri or quad band phone for it to work overseas. I know that AT&T custonmers who have a tri or quad band phone have no issues using their phones in London
All of our phones worked with out issues in London.
Unless you plan on being GLUED to your cell phone, you really do not need to buy a sim card or rent a phone. We used our cell for text messages only while in London and maybe racked up $3 in charges. The cheapest SIM card we saw was about GBP $20 and at the time it was about USD $40 so we definitely saved a ton of money by just using our own phone!
