DC Nestie needs help w. moving to charelston!

Hi Girls!

It looks like my family and I may move to Charelston and we are so excited!! Long story short in my BIL has a business there and I think we are going to plan to join him in both the business and the city. Here's what I need help with....

1. The business and BIL's residence is in Mt Pleasant...is this a good area for us to be raising kids? BIL is a bachelor for life and is not really able to help us with the school district thing...

2. If Mt Pleasant  isn't so great, what are some very near by towns that I could be looking at as well?

3. It looks like we could get a 3-4 BR house in great shape for about 275K...does this seem right, bc I know internet listing can be deceiving...

Obviously, we are investigating all of this on our own, but I thought I would ask you ladies, too.

TIA- and if you can think of any other helpful info, I would really appreciate it!

  • I don't live in Charleston, but I'm somewhat familiar with the area, so I'll do my best to help!  I don't know much about housing, but Mt. Pleasant probably has some of the best schools in the Charleston area, so you're good to go there!  It always seemed like it would be a great place to grow up.  275K sounds like it should be a good amount for what you're looking for.  Good luck :)

  • Mt. Pleasant is great but for a nice 3-4 BR house, I think you need to up your price range a bit. Most of the houses we looked at around Mt. Pleasant were quite a bit higher than $275k but that may have been due to the neighborhoods we were looking in- hard to tell! GL!

  • If you don't plan on private school, then yes IMO Mt P is the best place to go to elementary school.

  • Mt. Pleasant has decent schools.  Berkeley County schools are a bit better than Charleston County (I'm a teacher, and I've taught for both districts), and from what I hear, Dorchester District II is better still.  Mt P is rather expensive - for example, when we were house hunting 4 years ago, we could get a small 2BR condo in Mt P for ~$170k.  Since it's so close to the beach, the area can demand higher prices.  Daniel Island is gorgeous, and has better schools than Mt P (it's part of Berkeley County). Summerville is a great area to buy a house if you don't mind being about 30 min away from the city/beaches.  Goose Creek and Hanahan are also nice areas.  We lived in North Chas, almost in Goose Creek, but only because we didn't have kids. We had an awesome realtor - Sue Davis.  She helped us a ton, and she deals a lot with relocations.  She has a website - suedavishomes.com. Hope that helps a little!
