IndyGirl02

Just saw your post on the Pets board and thought I might be able to catch you on here since i am probably banned from there!  You are right.  I am nicer than that but I really think some of those girls are just extreme!  MH and I adore our dog.  He is our child.  We had seriously exhausted all other options (including spending several hundreds of dollars on obedience classes and still not being able to get our dog into a sit-stay command as everyone else recommended).  What irks me about those people is that we really felt this was the only option in the best interest of our dog.  I should have done my research that the Pets board is not the forum for questions regarding electric fences.  However, they made me sound like I was the most irresponsible pet owner.  Anyone who knows me can attest that is not the case.  I hope I didn't personally offend you but was just annoyed with their comments.

Re: IndyGirl02

  • Sorry to butt in, but I lurk on that board and saw that thread. Honestly, I think almost everyone was nice to you and offered good advice.
  • I frequent the pets board and I'm an Indiana nestie, and I have to agree with pp, most people, even after you had your little "none of you have lives" fit tried to give you alternatives to the electric fence.

    .

That being said, I doubt you're still reading over there, so I'll give my two cents here. I have no experience with them and have virtually no opinion about it, except that if used incorrectly (and I'm NOT saying YOU are using it incorrectly) it can phsyically hurt the dog. I read an article about a dog who was shocked by the electric fence her owners installed, had a seizure, and actually got stuck in the current from the fence. Whether this was a faulty fence, faulty usage, or a fluke, I wouldn't risk it. The "sit" and "stay" command works wonders. Your dog should, after some training, be able to hold "stay" until you release him or her. We have one pup is great at it, and one foster that we are still working on, but it can be done.

  • P.S. I have a Corgi as well. They are among the most intelligent of the breeds and are highly, highly trainable. There really is no reason why the "stay" command should not work with a little effort.
