Where to stay in Portland?

Hello lovely Oregon ladies! My hubby, DD and I will be visiting Portland next month for a wedding. I grew up near Salem and visit Portland all the time, but I've always just stayed with friends. Now that we have a baby though, I'd rather get a hotel or motel room so we can have our own little space and not turn someone else's house upside down. Can you recommend any budget-friendly places to stay that are in decent neighborhoods with stuff like restaurants and cafes within walking distance? Most of our friends live in NE and SE.

Also, anyone have any experience with McMenamin's White Eagle? The price and location are definitely right, but I'm not sure how loud it would be since it's above a bar (super convenient for us though!). I don't mind that the bathrooms are down the hall.

Re: Where to stay in Portland?

  • The White Eagle is allegedly haunted if you are into that. It might be kind of loud for your baby as the bar often has live music. Kennedy School is another McMenamin's option. I've never stayed there though. It's close to the Alberta District which has lots of shops, cafes, etc.

Check out the Inn At Northrup Station in NW. It's right along the streetcar line. I think the prices are pretty reasonable.

Try priceline or hotwire for hotels Downtown. This is often how I get great rates for places we visit.

  • I think White Eagle would be too loud, bc like pp said, they frequently have live music. The Kennedy school would be much more baby-friendly, and there is a cluster of cafes and restaurants (and a New Seasons grocery) around 30th & Killingsworth. There are still restaurants/bars at the Kennedy School, but the rooms are somewhat separate. It still won't be as quiet as a hotel, but I think LO could sleep.

I can't vouche for this place, but it may work for you.

I recently had friends stay at the Red Lion at the convention center, and the price was better than anything downtown. That are has several hotels which can be reasonably priced if there isn't something at the convention center. There are tons of restaurants, etc within walking distance.
