NWR: Which Cruise??

Hi girls!

So, We're planning on taking a cruise over Thanksgiving! We are going to take my Mom, she is excited, as she is not well traveled :)

We've narrowed it down to 2-

Princess- 7 night, to Cozumel, Honduras, Grand Cayman, and their private island

Carnival- 8 nights, Cozumel, Panama, and Costa Rica!!!

The 8 nights, is $100 cheaper than the 7 night one!

Ok, what do you think?

Re: NWR: Which Cruise??

  • I went to Costa Rica on my honeymoon and it was AWESOME!  So I would pick the Carnival just to go to Costa Rica.  I have been on the Western Caribbean cruise and while Cozumel and Grand Cayman are nice, Honduras is a little icky...at least the part that we were in was.  Regardless of which one you choose, though, you'll have a great time!!!

  • I just got back from my HM in Costa Rica! We can't wait to go back!!! We are leaning towards the 8 night. My DH likes that it's only got 3 ports, so we have lots of relaxation time. With my mother not being so active, and us having to back straight back to work, we don't want to do anything strenous!

Plus, while the cruise doesn't go through the Pananma Canal, we can take an excursion that will take us through!!

  • Where did you stay in Costa Rica?  We spent 4 nights at the Tabacon resort in the rainforest and LOVED every second of it.  We are planning to go back there for our fifth anniversary.  We spent the last 3 nights at the Grand Papagayo on the beach side.  The resort was "OK" compared to the Tabacon, but we still had a lot of fun.  I can't wait to go back either!

  • Alyssa-- both itinerary's sound wonderful! I'm jealous! Wink

My parents did the 8-day Exotic Western Caribbean cruise two summers ago, and enjoyed it! Carnival strictly enforced guest not to go off on there own in Panama because of security reason's, so  you basically had to purchase an excursion if you wanted to get off the ship that day. Being that my parents were stationed in Panama in the 80's they were excited to go back and explore for the day which is something they were unable to do.  Other than that my parents enjoyed all the extra days at sea on there ship and the other two ports.

Yes, Honduras is impoverished, and it reflects it more so where the cruises dock, but once you get to the other side of the island it is beautiful! It's like any Caribbean island---or even city... you have your poor and your rich areas.  I have had all positive experiences in Honduras. I absolutely love it, and the snorkeling there is amazing, and by far the best variety of fish than most of the other Caribbean islands. We felt like we were swimming in someones personal fish tank! It was amazing and can't wait to go back to dive since now we are PADI certified. When we went to Honduras 4 years ago we did the Tabyana Beach Break excursion, and thoroughly enjoyed the beach. Food and drinks were available and they weren't too badly over priced. My mom and dad just got back from an 8 day Carnival Cruise last Sunday and spent a day in Honduras. My mom actually booked an excursion outside of the cruise line prior to leaving for her trip. They went to Fins & Flippers http://www.finsandflippers.com/en/index.html and booked directly through them. It was $20 per person, and they had a private driver waiting for them at the pier. It was a private beach, had a fresh water pool, and tons of non-motorized sports that were also included in the package. They spent the whole day there, and did not want to leave. This was the first excursion she has ever booked outside the cruise line, and only did it because a friend highly recommended it, and she hopes to go back again on her next visit to the island!

I've done the Cozumel/Grand Cayman thing quite a few times, but always find fun stuff to do while visiting.

Like I said above, either itinerary is amazing, and no matter which cruise you pick you will have a blast!

  • Of course, my vote would be for the 7 night cruise, but that's because I loved our time in Honduras.  KAandJJ is right - the snorkeling and scuba are amazing!  You may also want to check out the current political situation in Honduras - the very recently had a coup d'etat (within the past month), and it probably hasn't affected the tourist industry on the coast too much, but it's a good idea to see what's going on right now.
  • Cruiselines are such a matter of opinion but I hate Carnival :( I've tried it twice and been disappointed twice with the food, the service and the dirtiness. I can say however that I've not been on a Carnival Cruise longer than 5 nights so maybe the bigger longer trips are better. I have heard good things about Princess but never been but I think that would be my pick.

I can highly recommend Royal Caribbean, I've been on their ships 4 times and the 3 nights are the cheap what can you expect but the food is still good and the boat is clean

Disney is by far my favorite!!

Norwegian is now my second favorite. I love the freestyle type cruise with more restaurants and eatting whenever you want! We are going on their new ship "The Epic" next August on the 4th sailing ever!!

My parent's were nervous about the current government issues that were/are going on in Honduras, but they said that it is not effecting Isla Roatan. Only the mainland.

I like Carnival a lot and have been on 6 cruises with them. I've found that the food and service on 5+ day trips are better than the shorter trips. Carnival is now starting to offer a freestyle dining option. If you book with them ask to have that option over the set dinning time.... you have to ask they don't just give it to you (yet).  I've cruised on RC, and didn't have great service and I noticed that they reused there food over and over again in dishes... I'm not one to waste food but you can kind of mask that you are reusing food and use it more creatively in different ways! I agree too--I love DCL!

  • As far as the boats go, I recommend Princess. Their ships are beautiful (we have been on two: Crown and Grand) and loved them.

DH and I didn't really care for Cozumel, but we LOVED Grand Cayman.  Oh and Princess Cay is beautiful too.

I agree with this, the Disney is just simply amazing!! We just went in July and had an awesome time. I'm sure you'll have fun on whatever one you choose though. Cruises are fun! I would rather go to Costa Rica than Mexico though, jmo.  : )

    Have fun!!!
