Teaching question?

Hi there - I am just looking into information about teaching careers in your state.  My husband and I are both high school teachers and are looking to move to the U.S from Canada.  I am trying to gauge what the teaching climate is like in your state (i.e., jobs, relative pay, etc?)  Or, if you have any recommendations/advice on any states that are especially good for teachers, please let me know!  I thought a few years back that I heard of some states that were offering signing bonuses to teachers who committed to 2 years?  Anything like that still available?  TIA

Re: Teaching question?

  • Hi Welome to our board! Sorry I haven't been over here in a few days. Jobs in Alabama are vary from county to county. Here in Madison County (North Alabama) they can't get enough teachers. It is growing fast. Other counties are laying off. It's really just where you want to more. I know 1st year get about $33,000. If you don't have a masters. You'll have to apply for certification and take the Praxis in your field. You should contact someone at the state dept and they can help you more. www.alsde.edu

I know Alabama isn't offering any signing bonus. As of today we are at 11% pro-ration. I'm not sure what states are better than others. My husband is a middle school teacher in Madison County and he just got tenure so we will be staying for a long time. If there is anything else you want to know feel free to page me on the bump board. (I'm over there more often)

  • Erin covered you pretty good.  I am an elementary teacher here in north alabama and like she said it varies by counties.  I know of a couple of other teachers on the boards and like Erin said I'd post on the Alabama bump board because several of them are over there and they give a broader range of counties as well.

  • I think Jefferson County is sort of a minefield right now with jobs in the education field... My step-dad works in Jeff Co as a special ed teacher and he is just grateful to have re-signed his contract this year. He knows of a TON of people that got laid off.

Good luck with moving to the states! :)

  • Birmingham City is always looking for the critical needs areas (Math, Science, Special Education and English Language Learners). There was a sign on bonus for those areas but I haven't heard anything about it in a while. I remember there being a hiring freeze for all other areas but I'm not sure whether it's still in effect. The starting salary is about $36,000.
