teaching question

Hi everyone - I am just looking into information about teaching careers in your state.  My husband and I are both high school teachers and are looking to move to the U.S from Canada.  I am trying to gauge what the teaching climate is like in your state (i.e., jobs, relative pay, etc?)  Or, if you have any recommendations/advice on any states that are especially good for teachers, please let me know!  I thought a few years back that I heard of some states that were offering signing bonuses to teachers who committed to 2 years?  Anything like that still available?  TIA

Re: teaching question

  • I live in Osceola county. It is next door to Orange county home to Orlando.

I taught in the county before having my son. Right now times are pretty tough. I have a lot of friends that are still teaching and everyone is worried about their job. The last few years have seen some layoffs. They have also been cutting back on health care benefits.

  • I teach in Lake County. It is scary with all the teachers getting laid off and budget cuts and what not. I highly recommend becoming a special education teacher if you think that would work for you - there seems to be a little more stability in that area. The health insurance isn't that great, but is it much better than what DH gets (the same bc prescription costs $40 a month down here versus $10 for 3 months in NJ).

I also taught in New Jersey. NJ has a fabulous union and the pay is much better than down here (I would be making $20,000 more in NJ than here in FL).

I haven't heard anything about signing up to teach for 2 years. Good luck!!

  • Hi there!

Right now, as previous posters have said, times are pretty tough here. Jobs are not so easy to come by, and unless you have a professional contract, you can be cut the next year! I taught for 3 years, and then got cut this year, right before i'd have gotten a professional contract :(

Most northeastern states have better unions and pay better- but the cost of living may be more. I have heard stories of Michigan and Ohio teachers trying for years to get a job!

The sign on bonus is a thing of the past I think. I do remember those, when we were desperate for teachers. Not anymore!

    Good luck!

  • I agree with pp about the north. In upstate NY the teachers there make more money and have better benefits than here. It is so much harder to get a job there though. The union is great for salary though.
  • Like pp have said, times are tough. I am at a private school and we cut a good percentage.

Salaries vary b/c the cost of living is a lot more in say NYC . . . apples and oranges. That being said, there are lots of places that do pay their teachers well. I went to a conference in TN and all those teacher made a TON more and had less experience. (their cost of living was low too)

Again, it is hard to compare.
