teaching question?

Hi there - I am looking into information about teaching careers in your state.  My husband and I are both high school teachers and are looking to move to the U.S from Canada.  I am trying to gauge what the teaching climate is like in your state (i.e., jobs, relative pay, etc?)  Or, if you have any recommendations/advice on any states that are especially good for teachers, please let me know!  I thought a few years back that I heard of some states that were offering signing bonuses to teachers who committed to 2 years?  Anything like that still available?  TIA

Re: teaching question?

  • Hm, I know there is a need for math/science at the Indianapolis Public School system, but you really need to know what you are getting into when teaching for them. I believe there is a fellow program with IPS that will pay you to get your master's while you teach there, but don't hold me to it.

I don't know much about teaching at the h.s. level, but I would suspect there would be some job opps depending on your field near Chicago, around Indy, around Louisville and around Cinci.

I haven't heard of signing bonuses, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some offer somewhere.

Move along, nothing to see here.....
  • If you want to move specifically to Indiana then Indianapolis would be you best bet.  I have heard Nevada has incentives for teachers going to their state to teach.  Good Luck!
  • I believe there are incentives for comitting to innercity schools for 2 years.  Not sure on the specifics though.
  • Most schools are looking for math and science teachers because those are the hardest to fill.

I do know that around Indianapolis competition this year has been tough and there have been very job postings.  Several school are taking their stimulus money and offering 2 year contracts.  There have been hundreds of applications for 1 or 2 positions.

If you work inner city or high needs areas the US government has programs for student loan forgiveness.

The schools around Las Vegas, Nevada were offering signing bonus 2 years ago to move their and work for them.

  • If you are interested in Indy specifically you may also want to look into the private schools.. a few off the top of my head (you can google)...

    - Park Tudor

    - The International School

    - Bishop Chatard

    - Roncolli

    - St. Richards.

    Good luck!
