teaching question?

Hi there - I am just looking into information about teaching careers in your state.  My husband and I are both high school teachers and are looking to move to the U.S from Canada.  I am trying to gauge what the teaching climate is like in your state (i.e., jobs, relative pay, etc?)  Or, if you have any recommendations/advice on any states that are especially good for teachers, please let me know!  I thought a few years back that I heard of some states that were offering signing bonuses to teachers who committed to a certain length of time?  Anything like that still available?  TIA

Re: teaching question?

  • I'm really no help, I'm not a teacher, I don't have kids, etc...

But I have a friend who moved here and had been a teacher in FL and could not find a job here.  I guess to work in a public school you have to have a certain certification that FL teachers do not have to have?  If you're willing to work in a private school I know the requirements are different, but the pay is generally less.

Sorry that I'm not much help, but since it didn't seem like anyone had any advice, I didn't want your question to go totally unanswered.

  • I just moved to Greenville this summer and have been looking for a teaching job.  I still have my job in the district where I moved from, but it's a 40 minute drive and I hate, hate, hate the school and surrounding community.  There haven't been many openings in Greenville.  I'm hoping next year I'll be able to switch over.  My sister recently graduated and hasn't found a job yet, and she's looking in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Pickens counties.  No one I know who is looking has had any luck  :(

South Carolina offers no signing bonuses, and most definitely no tenure.  If you look on the district website, you can find the pay scale.

I'm at Pickens.   I had a good experience student teaching at one of the middle schools, but not the one where I taught my first year.  Very unsupportive admin and a community where education is not valued, which made the first year incredibly difficult.

ah ha!  I have a friend at Picken's DSS.  She suggests similar things about the community.

  • Four years ago, schools would hire you over the phone they were so desperate for teachers, but now there are definitely not as many jobs in SC due to budget cuts.  Also, there are many struggling schools in the state, high poverty rates, and high drop out rates, all of which makes your job that much more difficult.  It took me 3 years to find a school in the Charleston area where I was happy.
  • I think it depends on what subject you're teaching insofar as how difficult it will be to find a job.

I have heard about math signing bonuses but I'm not sure if they did them this year.
