I'm trying to plan a fun winter getaway for DH and I, but I'm soo torn on where to go.
A part of me wants to go somewhere neither of us has been, like Vegas or maybe skiing (though I can't ski - I think I'd enjoy the sights and the snow and making fun of DH trying to ski, lol). Another part of me wants to take him to a place I love and have nostalgic memories of, like New York or Gatlinburg, TN.
I do know I'd like to go somewhere in the Continental US, stay somewhere between 5-7 days and would like to spend no more than $3,000.00.
So any suggestions? Past experiences?
Re: Where should we go?
We went to Vegas this past October, and I have to say we had BLAST! We went for DH's 30th bday, just us two. We knew we would have a good time, b/c we always do when we are together ::cue corney music:: but it totally exceeded our expectations. DH golfs, so we went out to an amazing course one morning. We did lots of sightseeing. We saw LOVE (Cirque show) and a concert (Jimmy Buffett, one of our fav artists). We rented a convertible for the entire time (great price at Priceline)... and we took a helicpoter tour of the Grand Canyon! As for the hotel and airefare, we got a good deal through Orbitz.
Dh has always wanted to do a winter vacation to go skiing, he's never been. I think that will be our next big vacation. However, his "busy seaon" at work is Oct - Dec 31st, so it will be difficult!
IMO, I'd choose someplace neither have been to enjoy and exprience it for the first time together... I'm corney like that.

when in winter are you thinking of traveling, Eli? Before, during, or after the holiday season?
Skiing trips are lots of fun, especially if you go with friends or family. 5-7 days a ta ski resort or town (vail or aspen, for example) might be too much time for just the two of you, IMO. The mountains are beautiful and the views are worth it but you might get a little bored if you can't ski, and DH might get tired of skiing solo (again, just my opinion)
If you've never been to NYC during the holiday season, i highly recommend it. The city is GORGEOUS during that time, and there's TONS to do (I'm sure you're already aware of this, lol)
Vegas sounds like lots of fun any time!
How about Boston, Philly, even Washington DC? these are all incredible cities to visit and get to know, but beware: Boston in Jan-Feb. is BRUTALLY cold.
Hope this helps!!

Hmm... you make a great point. Maybe I'll save the ski trip for a weekend. I am kind of pushing for NY, especially since he's never been so there will be tons for him to see, and I am DYING to see a few Broadway shows. But can we do NY in a weekend, too? Plus, I kind of want to go somewhere cold so I can rock cute puffy jackets and leather boots.
Jackie, DH is totally pushing for Vegas - I'd love to go there as well, but I can almost see the dollar signs in his eyes everytime he says the word "Vegas." He has a problem. LOL. I am kind of afraid of losing him to the casinos the whole time. Maybe if I plan activities and give him allotted gambling time, that would be a great trip.
Ay, so many choices...
Ayyyy, me too! My family and I used to spend Christmas up in Gatlinburg all the time and I have such fond memories of those trips. I'd love to share that with Anthony, but I also want to have fun, exciting things to do together, especially if we're going for a week.
I think we'll be going the first week of January.
you CAN do NYC in a weekend, but you might be skipping a lot of things to do... i think 5 days is great for nyc... with broadway shows, shopping, sight seeing, ice skating (!), walking around, and discovering amazing restaurants, time will fly!
I can only advise on the ones I've been to:
NYC- great getaway, lots of things to do and definitely gives you that "Holiday" feel. I love going to NYC in the winter even if its just for a 3 day weekend.
TN- very nice, cozy atmosphere and very romantic. I will say it can get a bit boring at times. If you guys are into going to see a lot of things there really isn't THAT much to do in TN except ski. If you ski, then thats great.
Vegas- Ive only gone in a big group but im sure its just as fun just the two of you!
Something Ive always wanted to do but never been- Napa Valley/Vineyards.
Enjoy your trip whatever you choose!
Ah, I see what you mean. Dh and I aren't gamblers. I think we allocated $200 to gambling, which was all spent on the last night. It lasted us over 2 hrs, and we got lots of free drinks, and got free passes to one of the clubs, so it was well worth it. LOL
I planned an "itenrary" (sp) before we left of must do's. We hit them all, and then some. Just touring the hotels can take 2 whole days! And shopping, oh my! And there are lots of shows to enjoy.

I recommend what we did on our honeymoon.
We did Vegas and Arizona. We rented a car and drove between the 2 places. The driving was hoenstly our favorite part. We drove on Route 66.
We aren't big gambling or clubbing people so when we went to Vegas we did a lot of eating and seeing the sights outside the strip. We had an amazing time.

Boston, MA is a place i've been wanting to take DH in the winter, it's such a pretty city. If you go on vrbo.com, you can find tons of house rentals there, perhaps you can find a cute one near a ski resort. We were thinking of doing that this winter, somewhere cozy with a fireplace.
I really enjoyed Vegas... It so much fun. Though if your not into the Drinking, partying or gambling you may not enjoy it to much. Though the shows are awesome. That's where we went for our honeymoon. Plus Spirit Airlines always has awesome deals to Vegas.
You may also enjoy Chicago. DH & I went 3wks ago & it was just awesome. We had such an awesome time & totally fell in love. We definitely want to go back. There is so much to do.
