Hi, moving to Charleston from NYC :)

Just saying hi, DH and I are moving down south at the end of June!  We visited Charleston this past April, but really only did touristy things.

We'd like to buy, but plan on renting first so we can learn the lay of the land.  Any tips on places to rent, or even specific rental communities?  TIA!

Re: Hi, moving to Charleston from NYC :)

  • Dh and I are moving on Friday from TX to Charleston. You might want to check out these apts : www.edgewaterplantationapts.com...

  • are you looking for an apartment or a house?

There are a ton of houses, duplexes, and townhouses in my neighborhood for rent. It is a great neighborhood if you are interested in urban living (it is on the penninsula, right next to the Citadel). The neighborhood is Wagoner Terrace.

  • We're looking for an apartment (assuming those are cheaper than houses) - we only need a two-bedroom place, max, since we're coming from a fairly large one-bedroom apartment (1100 sq ft) and need space to store stuff till we buy.  I guess part of our problem is that we look at the reviews on apartmentratings.com and a lot of the places are rated horribly, so I was hoping to hear from a resident who is somewhat pleased with their apartment, haha.

  • Do you or your husband have a job yet? If so, where is it? Commutes can be an issue in the Charleston area, so keep that in mind when looking at Apartments.
  • I may be working from home with my current job in NYC, so that isn't a problem.  DH would be in North Charleston, near a naval base I believe.

  • We've lived in harbor Pointe Apartments, in Mt. Pleasant, since last August and have been pretty happy with it.  The drive from Mt. P out to the naval base might be a bit long, but he would be driving oppostie the heavy traffic (of everyone driving INTO Charleston for work) so that could help to make it ok.  There are a few nice-looking apartments in and around N. Charleston but I can't rmemeber the names, sorry!  You can find them on apartmentguide.com.  As for apartment reviews, I think that all places -- everywhere -- are going to end up with a few crappy reviews.  Those, I try to just overlook.  But if a place has overwhelmingly bad, and nothing BUT bad reviews, then avoid, avoid, avoid!!  :)  (Do keep in mind -- if people are complaining about bug problems, well this is the south and that's going to be a bit of an issue everywhere...)  Good luck!
  • We ended up going with The Grove at Oakbrook.  The rent was cheap (they built too many two bedroom units, which were too high priced to rent, so they lowered the rent by $200 on them), the place looked clean, and most of the bad reviews were about people being loud at the pool - I grew up in NYC, so I doubt kids at a pool will bother me much ;p

    Thanks for the advice!

  • I lived in NYC too :) We rented a house for a year since we have pets, and then bought a house a block away from where we rented since we loved the neighborhood so much.  We live in West Ashley, which is 5 minutes from downtown Charleston (the historic district) and 10 minutes from my office in Mt. Pleasant. Since you're moving to Summerville, you're going to be living kind of far from downtown (30 minutes) and I've never been out there so I can't tell you much about the city.  It looks like a beautiful apartment complex though.  Good luck with the move and I hope everything goes smoothly!
