Charleston House Hunting

Hi Ladies - my husband and I recently moved to the Charleston area and are elbow deep in house hunting.  We are looking on James Island, Johns Island, and West Ashley.  He works on Kiawah, and I work from home.  I know so little about the areas other than from what I have found out online and by driving around.  Does anyone have any strong opinions about any of the three areas above.  I know that everything is very subjective, but I would love to hear any insight from people who actually live in any of those places!!  Thanks for any help or advice.

Re: Charleston House Hunting

  • I'm fairly new to living in Charleston- actually moving to JI this weekend! But, i have vactioned there since i was a kid, and have tons of friends in the area that gave great insight when we first started looking.

As for West Ashley, I hear that you really have to watch the area because some parts can get kind of ghetto, but other than that JI and Johns are both really nice!

Where is your hubby working on Kiawah?

  • I lived on Kiawah Island and Johns Island growing up and still LOVE going back to that area. I agree w/ the pp though-certain areas can be tricky but Kiawah, Johns Island and James Island are pretty reliable.

    Big Smile
  • I'm not a fan of West Ashley. I used to teach at West Ashley High, and pp is correct in that some areas are pretty shady.  I do like the area around Bee's Ferry, which is really pretty, but overall don't enjoy the traffic that comes with the area.
  • Every area has their seedy spots, even James and Johns Is's. Some of  the worst neighborhoods butt right up to some of the "best neighborhoods". My advice, check out the neighborhood and its surroundings day, night, and then later at night.

Traffic is going to be something you deal with, no matter what - it just might be a little different depending on the area. H and I both work downtown and live in Summerville, we knew rush hour traffic would be a part of our lives from the jump - but we wanted to live where we live and work where we work.

Work with an experienced REA who will give it to you straight up and you will be fine, in the same breath do some due diligence. Is the area you are looking at in the City of Charleston or the County - it makes a difference in the services you will get, who responds to a 911 call, etc. educate yourself.

Good luck and welcome to Charleston!

  • Thank you all for your tips and advice! I really appreciate it.
