san diego zoo or wild animal park?
What's the difference? Any insight please?!? I went to their website and it really didn't say. I thought that the zoo was the zoo and the wild animal park was more of a caged in area, but you could drive through it, and it's more open for the animals to roam?!? Am I close?
Also, I have found these Go San Diego Cards at this website,
http://www.gosandiegocard.com/sandiego-attractions.html
Is it legit? It says I could buy this card for a 1-day pass (really however many day pass I want) and could use it at any of the locations they list as an attraction.
Re: san diego zoo or wild animal park?
we haven't gone to WAP yet. we have been to the zoo many times~ love it! it's located in balboa park, which is a wonderful place. lots of museums & awesome architecture. the pompeii exhibit is @ the sd natural science museum. it was amazing! just a heads up, the zoo is doing renovations in the back area. don't expect to see lions, giraffes, rhinos, & some other african animals. the elephants are in a smaller area that you see them sooo close! it's still fun. we're just missing some of our animals which are relocated to the WAP. have a great time here! we loved visiting here so much that we ended up moving here from the midwest!
You have the basic idea of the parks down. I've never been to the WAP, but loved the zoo. It's a zoo like most other zoos but pretty large and has some cool animals. Go in the evening if you actually want to see them moving.
Another reason I like the zoo is the location. You're right in Balboa park which like PP said is really nice! The WAP is randomly put in a corner of Escondido and there's really nothing else up there. The zoo you can make a whole day out of. The WAP is only an afternoon.
If you are just visiting SD on a limited amount of time, then it'd probably be better just to go to the Zoo on location alone. Especially with the price of gas getting to and from the WAP, which is a good 1/2 hr to 45 minutes out of town (depending on where you are staying).
That said, you really can't go wrong with either one - It seems like the zoo has a larger variety of animals, but WAP's exhibits are pretty large because of the room that they have (no, it is not one of those drive-thru animal parks), and they are set up to be like their natural habitat. They have a large area set up to mimic the African plains where you can go through on a tram and see giraffes, rhinos, wildebeasts, etc. living amongst one another (no cages separating them!) as in their natural habitat. For that reason, I actually prefer the WAP.
