Pregnant girls?

I'm asking this on behalf of my pregnant sister b/c now I'm being the worried sister :)

They've had on the news about the concern of pregnant women and the swine flu and how they should get the vaccine...are you getting it?  My sister of course is pregnant and she works in a pediatrician's office with kids.  If not that vaccine should she be getting the regular flu shot?  She stubborn and says she's not getting any shots but is it something she should be doing b/c of her job and being pregnant.

If you are give me some reasons so I can tell her :)  I think I'm worse then my mom!!

Re: Pregnant girls?

  • The people most effected by the flu -- and the people most likely to die from it -- are the elderly, small children and pregnant women. Her OB will most likely tell her to get the flu shot -- I was told to w/both of my pregnancys.

I know nothing of the swin flu vaccine and would ask my OB her opinion.

  • You can not get the swine flu vaccine.  It isn't avaliable to the public yet.  It is only being given out to areas that have a high risk of contracting it.
  • This was published yesterday:

    http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20090729/pregnant-women-first-get-swine-flu-vaccine

It says that the vaccine will most likely be available in October.   I am sure more info will be available in the coming months.

As for the flu shot, I would think that she would want to get that, but I have no personal experience with that.  I will let our pregnant ladies and moms answer that one! :)

  • if you are pregnant you should absolutely get the flu shot.  it is irresponsible not to.

swine flu shot not available yet, but if/when it does i would also get it!

I agree with this 100%! The risks are way too high to not get it. I get it every year and made sure I got it early when I was pregnant.

  • There was just an article on CNN about this and the doctors in the article suggested that all preggo ladies get it.  They said that 13% of the deaths from swine flu were pregnant women--kinda scary.

Your sis should def talk to her OB, but I have a feeling the doc will recommend getting it.

There was a news story on TV stating that components of the swine flu are linked to autism.  So I'm up in the air if I'm going to get it.  I'll have to talk more to the doctor about it in Sept.
  • She is going to ask her Dr. about it....I don't think she was aware she was suppose to get the regular flu shot but I'm sure they will tell her.  She has gotten in the past few years and always ends up with the flu so that's why I think she doesn't like the idea of getting it.

I will pass on the info to her,

  • I am kind of expecting my OB to recommend a flu shot, especially because I work with young children. I also heard about the swine flu shot on CNN being available this year.

I would say your sister needs to ask her OB or regular doctor and do what they say is best for her!
