Wallpaper removal?

We bought an older home a few months ago and have been slowly working to make it our own. This weekend we are beginning the task of removing some old (and tacky!) wallpaper. Does anyone have experience with this and the desire to offer some words of wisdom?

Re: Wallpaper removal?

  • congrats on your home purchase!!

as for wallpaper - ugh - its one of my least favorite jobs. if you have access to a steamer or would be willing to rent one, thats going to be your easiest way to go.  Using a steamer you simply score the paper all over, steam it, and use a large putty knife to peel it off.  If you dont have a steamer, then I like to use vinegar to loosen the glue on the back of the paper.  So you fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 1 part water and spray the paper in sections (you want to get it pretty drenched). And similar to the steamer, use a putty knife to get under it and peel/scrape it off.

Either way, its a messy job so be sure to cover your floors unless you want to be cleaning up glue for the next few months :P

best of luck!! i'm sure it'll look great when you are finished

  • Thank you. I'll be sure to rent a steamer. And for some reason, I wasn't thinking I'd need to cover the floors, so a BIG thank you for that heads up!!!

  • I have friends who swear by this stuff (in conjunction with the steamer)

  • I second the scorer and steamer. It worked great for me. I actually bought a steamer (40 or 50 dollars maybe) because I had wallpaper everywhere in my previous house.  I felt like it paid for itself.
  • I second the scorer and Zinsser. I've never used a steamer.

Also, I've found the best way to remove it depends on the kind of paper it is and how old it is. In our house (built 1950, and the wallpaper was probably about that old), it worked best for some rooms to grab the wallpaper (dry) up at the ceiling and peel it off, then go back afterwards and spray the glue that was stuck to the wall and scrape it off with a wide scraper. If you happen to have that same kind of paper, it might be worth a try before you score and soak the whole wall.

  • Another peice of great advice. Our house was built in 1967 and I'm thinking that some of the wallpaper could be that old! Thanks!
