BATS!

Oh. My. God.

This afternoon we made a pretty freaky, scary, goosebump-inducing discovery.  A "colony" of bats have made a home between the storm window and screen in our bathroom window!!!  Eeek!  When we first discovered it I told DH to let them be - no harm, no foul, bats aren't so bad...when they're OUTSIDE my home.  And technically they were outside since the screen was keeping them from entering the house.  Or so I thought...  It's an older window (that just got bumped up to the top of the list of ones to be replaced - pronto) so when the storm is opened to allow air flow it creates a gap at the top of the screen portion which then opens to the inside (hard to explain...it goes storm window, screen, deep sill, then the actual window).  Let's just say that one of those creepy things *almost* became a toy for my very curious cat.  EEEEEK!!!  So the window is now CLOSED and has been thoroughly inspected for any potential breach of security, lol.  I'm hoping that tonight once they make their grand exit I can get the storm window closed so they're out for good.  Until then, I am freaking out!  I tried to take pics but they weren't coming out so good because of the screen and we have privacy glass in the bottom portion of the window so now that it's closed I can't see the things at all (thank God!).

I think I need a drink.

Re: BATS!

  • OH NO!  I HATE bats in the house! I'm glad you found them in the window though before finding them swooping around your house.  That would not have been a fun discovery while taking a shower!  Good luck getting the storm window closed tonight.  I'd be freaking out til then too.

When I was little my bedroom had a drop ceiling in it.  The actual ceiling above that had a small gap by the chimney that ran up to the attic.  Bats would get in the attic and then make their way through the gap and be caught in between the regular ceiling and the drop ceiling.  I'd hear them banging back and forth in between them at night and hide under the covers screaming my head off until someone came to my rescue!

  • EEEK is right!  I would be freaking out and checking to see if they were still there all the time!  Hope they leave tonight.  Thank goodness Max didn't get to them.  Good luck!

  • Oh my!  How did you still sleep in your bedroom after those instances, Jen?  I have a hard time sleeping if I see a spider in my room!  Could not imagine what I'd do if I'd see or hear the bats flying around  :(

Christina - I HAVE been checking every few minutes, lol!  I'm enthralled and disgusted at the same time.

What I don't get is why they're hanging out in such a well lit area...not that it's sunny today or anything, but it's still daylight.  I thought bats liked to sleep in the dark?  They are sleeping upside down though and you should see their claws/feet that they hang from - yikes.  It's like National Geographic in my bathroom!  I so wish I could get a pic.  There are like 6 of those little suckers...pun intended.  Is it juvenile of me to keep thinking of that movie The Lost Boys and picturing them turning into vampires and making me their dinner?

  • Have two drinks!!

When my niece was a baby (she is now 14), my sister found a bat in their kitchen in the middle of the day.  She had recently read an article in a parenting magazine about a baby that died suddenly and it ended up a bat scratched it and gave it rabies.  So she called the pedi and they thought she was being a crazy mother but they told her to have it tested if it would make her feel better.  A few hours later the health dept called her to tell her that they all had to go to the hospital to get rabies shots!  Since then bats have had a bad reputation with our family.

  • Charlene, I KNEW you would be checking in on them!  I wouldn't be able to stay away either.  LOL at the Lost Boys!

Denise that is a crazy story!  Thank goodness everyone was ok!

It was tough that's for sure!

It's like National Geographic in my bathroom!

    LMAO!

I think this movie was on last night . . and randomly Joe and I were talking about it in the waiting room at my Dr appt today.
  • Denise - Wow!  That is scary!

I remember camping at Locust Lake when I was little and they did a nature class at the ampitheater on bats.  They said they couldn't fly from the ground . . that they had to climb and fall to actually be able to fly.  So they said the best thing to do was to knock them to the ground if you found one in your home.  Yeah SO not true!  Growing up my poor Dad had many bumps and bruises from trying to catch bats and those little buggers always flew right from the ground.

  • Denise - that is a crazy story!  Glad they were all ok.

Christina - I can't stop checking, I'm kind of sad that I have to go to work tonight.  I think two have gone already since I think there are only 4 in there now, they keep moving!  Eww  I'll be in the window tonight with a flashlight, I'm sure, lol.

Jen - The Lost Boys is one of my all-time favorite movies, I'm sad I missed it last night...but then again, maybe not.  I think I'd be more freaked out if I had seen it!  How random that you were talking about it today though, weird.

  • OH my gosh! I'd be freaking out too. Maybe I missed it, but what are your plans to get them out of there? I hope you got some sleep last night!
  • Holy crap!  I would be freaking out big time.  How did you sleep last night?  I hope they vacate soon!!

    Denise, what a scary story!!

  • OMG I would definitely be freaking out.  I don't care for bugs, bats, or anything creepy, crawling, flying, etc.  I hope you can get it resolved quickly without any more incidents!!

We had no plan other than to close the window so they couldn't enter the house.  They were wedged between the storm window and screen (never actually "in" the house) which is a pretty tight space to begin with and with the window being on the 2nd floor, no easy way to get to it from outside.  So we just let them be.  At some point Friday evening they took off and we haven't seen them since, and hopefully it stays that way.

And Lesli - I slept fine.  Since they never actually made it IN the house I really didn't have a problem.

  • Yikes!!!  I would have been majorly freaked out, too.  Glad they haven't been hanging around lately.  hee hee.
