Adult Braces
So long story short (my apologies for my FB/Nestie friends for the rehash) but I found this week that I have a cracked tooth. I have a temp crown on there now and am getting a perm crown a week after I get my braces... oh yeah, I'm getting braces. My bite is lopsided and I have TMJ so it is causing my teeth to wear oddly on the one side (likely added in my crack)... soo.. I'm getting braces. This is my second round, I had them in HS however, I have heard it's different as an adult. Anyone here have experiance with braces as an adult? with a crown on a tooth??? TIA

My mom had/has TMJ. she did 8 years of adult orthodontia and is substantially improved. She does have this scary looking retainer to wear at night (which is a must to keep all the work from moving back) but it has really helped to jaw pain and headaches.
My only other experience with adult braces is a friend that never needed them in h.s., but after her wisdom teeth came out her teeth really moved. I guess it is importatant that they don't move your teeth really fast, or it can weaken them and give you gum pain.
Last, I actually broke my two front teeth while wearing braces (long embarrasing story!) My dentist actually thinks the braces saved me from having all my front teeth knocked out. So sometimes having braces will almost stableize your other teeth, i.e. your crown. HTHs! Look at the brightside, this time around all your frozen drinks after having your braces tightened can have booze in them!
I did invisalign about 2 years ago with Dr.Reese on the southside. I loved them!! Plus you get to whiten your teeth as your correcting them!
GL! I know dental work is not fun for most people.
Adult braces: They hurt much worse than I remembered. I had them in 6th and 7th grade and then when I was 25. I should have worn that retainer! I was really embarassed at first, but several weeks after I got them put on I met DH. That restored my confidence that I was not a complete dork with braces (ok, probably was, but whatever). One thing that was better as an adult was that since I was paying for them, I was much more careful not to break braces and to wear the rubber bands and stuff. That made my treatment go faster than expected. Good luck!
