Old Town Mexican Cafe?

We're going to SD for our anniversary, and a list of "must do's" I found online said to eat here.

So, is it really that great?  Or can you point me to a great mexican restuarant- great food, atmosphere, margaritas, etc.?

The food is REALLY good and really cheap...but I don't know if I would choose there if I was visiting...

If you go into Old Town, just walk around and go into a place that looks like your scene...every place is delicious, I've been to most of them!!

    Have fun!!

  • It's not that great. Pretty over-hyped in my opinion. We went once and thought it was wonderful. Then about a year later we tried again. The menus changes and we guess they had new management. The guacamole was now a pre-made nasty mess, not home made and fresh. The food was also dry and overly salty (I had carnitas). So we haven't been back.

There are lots of options in Old Town. I prefer Casa Guadalajara. It's on the opposite end of Old Town. But a better option, and non-fancy, is El Indio. It's on the very outskirts of Old Town area. http://www.el-indio.com/ And if you're looking for great Mexican food instead of just hokey-decor then try it out. It's better than Cafe any day.

  • Sorry, wanted to follow up on Casa Guadalajara.....it has the decor, margaritas and music that you mentioned in your first post. It also has a pretty courtyard seating area.

  • I haven't been to Old Town Mex Cafe in years.  Bummer the menu has changed.  :(

My fave place is/was Casa de Bandini.  Not sure if it is still there, though.

  • My fave Mexican place is Casa Guadalajara, it has great food and atmosphere.  I have always had a good experiences there.  Hope you have fun on your trip.
  • I also think that OTMC isn't that great.  We always went to Casa de Bandini, which changed owners (and names) a few years ago.  The food was still great, but last time I was in Old Town (about a month ago), they were renovating the building so it was closed Sad

El Indio rocks!  As the pp said, it is a hole in the wall, but oh so fabulous!!!  Another great Mexican restaurant is Fidel's in Solana Beach.  I big puffy heart that place!!!!

  • Thanks for the recs ladies.  I think we'll try out Casa Guadalajara.  In the couple of times I've been to SD I've never been to old town, so I thought we'd check it out.  Thanks again!
