Richmond nesties-help

I am meeting a friend in Richmond.  Neither of us are familiar with Richmond.  We want to meet to catch up maybe shopping and lunch.  We will also each have our daughters with us (4 year olds) so if there is another kid friendly option that would be great too.  Any suggestions?  Thank you!

Re: Richmond nesties-help

  • Maymont Park!!  It's gorgeous, has a petting zoo, an indoor Visitor's Center, a cafe at the VC, and is free and open to the public!  (donations, of course, are accepted).  I highly recommend doing this early morning during the summer months since it is so flipping hot and humid.  www.maymont.org

There is a shopping mall out in west end that I have heard is very nice; have not been to it though (I moved away from Richmond close to 6 years ago unfortunately, which is roughly when it opened).

For delicioso pizza, Bottom's Up Pizza in Shockoe Bottom is the bestest, and located near the canal it's a neat place to walk, maybe even catch a ride on the canal.  The old train station is also nearby.  That is definitely a daytime activity with little ones though?

    Have fun and good luck!!

  • Short Pump Town Center if just outside of Richmond. It's a very nice outdoor mall with lots of good places to eat (California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory are my favs.) They have a train that runs outside for the kids and a beautiful fountain w/ lots of benches and chairs to sit outside and talk.  Also, a nice lawn for the kids to run around in. Sometimes they are special events going on so check their website. http://www.shortpumpmall.com/

  • Maymont is a great option, but if you go into the Nature Center it is no longer free to the public.  We just went last week and it is $3 for adults and $2 for children.  Also the little cafe has changed it's menu to nachos, pizza and burgers.  Right up the little ones alley, but maybe not so much the adults.    The Science Museum of Virginia and the Children's Museum are right next door to each other and there is a lovely cafe at the SMV.

Look into Lewis Ginter as well - fab gardens and lovely little places to eat spread out on the grounds.  Good Luck and enjoy Richmond!
