POLL: Help me decide/ weight in!

We spent all weekend looking at refrigerators, and are still up in the air about what we want to do... My in-laws have graciously offered to pay for our refrigerator; however, have  not given us a set dollar amount. So we are guessing they are going to give us $1k, and the rest comes out of our pocket. The home we are purchasing has a stove, microwave, and dishwasher. Here are the options we have thought about, and I want everyone's input on what they would do if they were in my shoes:

  1. Purchase a used refrigerator on craigslist and use the rest of the money towards other things for the home.
  2. Purchase one bad-ass refrigerator (french doors, water/ice mounted to refrigerator, pull out freezer drawer) and upgrade the rest of the appliances next year at taxes. (This would mean us putting in an additional $1k).
  3. Buying a middle of the road set from a retail store (most of them are selling packages for $2k, but we will know that everything is brand new, good working order, and is under warranty).
  4. Buy a package deal off craigslist for half the price mentioned above.... and not have a warranty!
  5. Buy a middle of the road refrigerator that matches the current appliances in the house and pray that the current appliances will be ok!
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Re: POLL: Help me decide/ weight in!

  • I would go with option #2, but I really really really want one of those refrigerators, so I might be swayed in that direction out of my own personal wants.  Big Smile  Otherwise, I would probably go with #3 and just get all new appliances.

Welcome to home ownership!  I have come to name my house "the money pit".  LOL

I know I really LIKE option 2 as well.... since I'm big into cooking I would like to have one very large top of the line refrigerator instead of 2 (one in the kitchen and one in the garage)! But my husband also doesn't think we need the crem-de-le-crem.... he reminds me that we are wanting champagne for beer prices! lol... Although I will be greatful with whatever route we decide!

  • I would maybe buy a reasonably priced one and use the rest of the money for some other house related project. Although I would love a fancy-schmancy fridge too, I found a lot of unexpected expenses when we moved in. Like for us we had no garage opener, half our windows were missing screens, a lot of our furniture that fit nicely in an apartment was too small for a house so we wanted/needed new stuff etc. so it would have been nice to have some extra cash for those items. Or you will want some new stuff maybe i.e. decor items.
  • I would buy one at appliance direct...there's no way I'd spend $2000 on a fridge.  We spent $1900 for fridge, microwave, oven, and dishwasher.  Good luck!

  • I'd get a whole set on Craigslist/Appliance Direct /Discount Store and get all decked out applicances for half the price one item would cost you.

We've ALWAYS bought the warranty and NEVER EVER used it. Should anything ever have gone it was WAY after warranty was expired.

  • Should you decide to get a new fridge, I highly recommend the Amana French Door. We have it in stainless and got it from Home Depot for around $1600 I think. We opted to not have a water/ice dispenser because, from all the research I did, it seemed that most problems with fridges seemed to be with the water/ice dispenser.

  • I think you should try checking out Appliance Direct, we purchased our fridge from there, a Maytag stainless french door counter depth fridge that was $2700 in all stores and due to a very small dent towards the back of the fridge (that you cannot see) we got it for $800!!!

I tried to attach a pictures, if that doesn't work, I'll email it to you.

  • How does the rest of the kitchen look? I wouldn't buy appliances that might outshine the rest of the kitchen, unless of course you are planning on upgrading your cabinets/counters in the near future.

My kitchen isn't super fancy - has builder grade cabinets that are nice but not what I would choose if I could have a custom kitchen - so personally, I would buy a nice fridge, but I wouldn't over it do. On the other hand, if I was in my dream home and loved everything else about my kitchen already (or was planning on redoing my kitchen in the near future) then I would splurge on the nicer fridge.

  • I say option#2. The Appliance Direct thing works too. I would say to get a really good fridge. That is something you will probably have for a long time. Personally, if I were buying anything for my home...even if it is a "starter home" I would still buy what I really want. Anything I ever skimped on in my 8 years of homeownership...I ended up regretting not spending the little extra it would have cost to just get what I wanted in the first place.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • We went through the same thing when we purchased our home about a year and a half ago. ?We opted to buy the top of the line fridge that we wanted. ?We have a nice kitchen (dark 42" cabinets) & the rest of the appliances are stainless steel. ?Our thought process was if we buy a cheaper one, we will end up regretting it & then just purchase the one we want down the road. ?We purchased ours from Sears, so we did the no interest for a year thing (just make sure you pay it off in time). ?We are still happy with our decision.
  • Thank you to all who gave opinions! We are both still very much torn!

We did  go to Appliance Direct and the Sears Appliance Outlet this weekend, and were appalled at the horrible condition that 99.9% of the refrigerators were in and they still wanted around $1500-2k! That's why we started thinking about the brand new route...

We have found a few nice sets on craigslist, but no one has called/emailed us back--so we are starting to think that we might need to go one of two routes:

    1. mack daddy fridge (if we go this route we are between the LG and the Samsung). If we do this option we will most likely do the no interest for a year thing--which we will definitely have it paid off since I don't want any extra charges that we don't need or have to pay!
    2. middle of the road fridge (not sure yet

I realize that we are going to have a lot of unexpected items we will most likely need to get or want. We have to get garage door clickers and our code reset since that is not coming with the house, DH wants to paint the garage floor (that's an additional $100 we weren't planning on). We have to buy a lawn mower, and most likely much, much more....

I think we have a pretty standard kitchen. We are changing the color of the wall, adding a back splash, and hardware to the cabinets. You can't really tell, but the cabinets have crown molding on top.
