West Ashley Ladies - A Question

Does anyone in the West Ashley area (Bees Ferry) know where I can find more information about the park/rec center that is being built in the Grand Oaks Plantation area?  I have tried to find information online but have been unsuccessful.  I am curious as to what they plans are for the park.  Thanks!

Re: West Ashley Ladies - A Question

  • the city of charleston park just bought the 25+ acre land in june i think and they are already calling for an opening in 2009 which seems really soon.  i believe i heard it will have multiple tennis courts, lap pools, gymnasium, sports fields, skate park, dog park & lots of walking trails.  i believe its called bees landing recreation center.  its located at 1590 Ashley Gardens Blvd.  ooo here is what i've found:

this site has great links for master planning and other community concerns going on in the bees ferry west ashley area.  (like the long savannah development & glenn mcconnell extension).  it seems construction started in 2007.  one of my friends is an architect of the project so i'll check to see if they know anything about the rec center.  it seems the dog park will be part of a later development for the park. actually i might drive by tonight to see whats up.

even though i work downtown & have a long commute some days, i would have a hard time living in another area of charleston.  i absolutely love it here.

  • Wow!  Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it.  My husband and I are looking at a house down the road from the new rec area/park in Grand Oaks as well as a house in another neighborhood.  How long does it take you to get downtown during rush hour.  Currently I work from home, and my husband works on Kiawah.  My work from home job may end in October so I am going to start looking for other jobs very soon.

We just moved to the area from DC and are on a major house hunt. We've narrowed it down to the West Ashley (Bees Ferry) area.  We get a great feeling from that part of town and can't wait until we actually live there.

I drove past the new park area over the weekend, and it looks like it is coming along really well.

  • typically it takes me 30 minutes to get to king/market st area from our townhouse.  on school days it takes around 45 to get to work.  i work until 6 mon-thurs so i have an easier commute home.  the bad part is bees ferry/glenn mcconnell.  from 7-7:45am there is tons of traffic on the road taking kids to school.  once i'm past I-526 its usually smooth sailing.  DH works off of leeds ave in north charleston just off of 526 and it only takes him 15 minutes.  keep in mind we live near the bi-lo on bees ferry by hwy 61 so we're a ways down from where you're looking.  that adds about 5 minutes for us to get to the bees ferry/glenn mcconnell light, but if you are far enough to the back of grand oaks, it might take you that long too.

  • Thanks again for all of the info.  I drove past that Bi-Lo on Sunday when I was out with my realtor so I know exactly what you are talking about.  Coming from a big city, a 45 minute commute is totally manageable.  That area of town just seem so nice.  Very nice!

It wasn't purchased this past june...the work began a while ago and its been in the city's hands for awhile now. Perhaps you are thinking of the land the county recently purchased in WA?

The facility should be amazing. Those living nearby should be very happy with the space.
