changing over license/registration Question

I just moved here and need to change both my license and registration over to Oregon. How do I go about doing this? I know that i probably have to go to the DMV to take the test for my license but can I get a new registration without a license right away ( for car insurance purposes)? Such a pain to do..!! Also, are the lines insane at the DMV here? Thanks!

Re: changing over license/registration Question

  • First check out the oregon DMV website it will tell you what you need.

    For licence:

    http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/driverid/licenseget.shtml

     and registration:

    http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/vehicle/trooshavetitle.shtml

you have to pass DEQ (emissions testing) before you can register.

The lines here can be a bit hectic. The best time to go is on a weekday in the middle of the day. You can actually call the DMV and ask them when the slowest times are so you can go when the lines will be shorter. Plus they can answer any questions you may have. You may or may not have to take a drivers test, so I would recomend calling to see if you need to. If for some reason you need to you can make an appointment to do so while you are on the phone. The portlaqnd area # is 503-299-9999. HTH

  • I've always done the license part first. The first time I had to take the written test, which is easy enough to pass if you read the book while you wait in line. I really suggest reading the book, just for the stupid questions they ask, like how many points you get on your record for doing whatever. I've not had a huge problem with lines, but I think I've also gone at off times. Make sure you bring cash or a check!

As far as DEQ, you go there to get your registration once you pass the emissions. The one closest to us is open late Weds nights, and we've had good luck going then. I think they say the end of the month is the busiest time. I really don't know if you can do this first or not. I've had my insurance not match the state my car has been registered in a few times, and it has been fine.

  • We moved here in September and are just now changing our licenses and plates over.  They just expired, but our car was totaled so I can't help you on how to renew them.  For future reference though, if you buy a car here they just add the license and registration into your car cost and they give you the plates at the dealership.  I thought that was weird.

My husband had to go to the DMV several times, because the line was so long and he would run out of time each time he went.  He finally got to take the test and pass.  He was issued a temporary license, but the new one came in the mail in a couple of days.  It's expensive though, it was like $60 I think.  We only paid $24 in Nebraska.  Hope this helps!
  • I've added the above websites to my bio for future reference. Smile
