Quick survey..need others input!

My FI is in the process of expanding his gym....the concept is different from most open gyms and they aren't sure what price people are ok paying.

They are going to be a smaller scale gym b/c we like the whole idea of knowing all of our clients.  The idea is to merge personal training and a regular gym...there will be trainers there at all times to help you and answer any questions you have and also make up 6 week programs for you to follow.  They won't be like the trainers at the big gyms that are just trying to sell you something and they will all be good trainers and not weekend certified trainers, they are strictly there to watch the clients in the gym and just be there if needed. Think of it more like group personal training. They are also going to offer classes like kick boxing and what not and still offer the one on one personal traing for those who prefer the one on one.

What monthly price would you pay?  We are going back and forth b/w 39.99 and 49.99....We are trying to see what others think and if it's something people would be interested in and willing to pay

Thanks in advance!

Re: Quick survey..need others input!

  • I pay $38/month and can go to any available classes, plus I get use of the pool, sauna, etc.  It's the LA Fitness on Route 38.  I could pay less for a smaller gym, but I'd rather pay for some open space and the amenities.  There's no training built into that price.

I would think the trainers would get bored and how would you really pay them if you're not getting a commission per client??

You seem to still want to keep the PT a big part of the gym so I would keep it separate.  Maybe work something out so that clients can come in just for personal training (one price) or they can join the gym for a monthly fee and get a discount on PT sessions.

I think that pricing it a little lower without the personal training built in would be more advantageous to the business and maybe make the personal training a little less expensive than it is now.

  • Thanks for the response.  with the big gyms like L.A. I know a lot of people who  pay around the $40 a month price but never use the pool, sauna.  That's where we are confused b/c not that many people actually use the pool at the big gyms.  As far as open space we plan on having plenty of that.

They keep changing the idea back and forth and it gets so confusing as to what will work.  As for the trainers that would be working there they would get paid hourly and could also do one on one traing on the side.  We can't really lower the price of personal training b/c we are already the cheapest around...the big gyms charge ALOT more then us and their trainers don't even have good certifications.

I'm gonna give them whatever opinions or advice I get b/c it helps to see what others think....our ideas was trying to think of a way to do personal training on a cheaper scale for those who can't do it one on one.

  • I would start low and build your way up.  I think you would want to build inital interest/word of mouth,  then raise prices, if things are going well.  Perhaps do an introductory rate that members could "lock in" if they signed up initially (I worked at a gym for 8 years and members used to get upset every year when we raised the prices).

For me, I would say that the $39 is much more appealing than $49.

  • I agree that the option to join the gym to work out without personal training might be appealing to some. It's hard because while I agree people care about open space, but aren't using pools and sauna much $10/month gyms are now popping up that offer just that.

    Whatever they decide good luck!

  • Thanks girls....That's why this is so confusing b/c there are some many types of gyms out there.  When we ask around the reason a lot of people don't like the $10 gyms is b/c there is no open floor space and no classes so we figured offereing them would be good.

I also agreed that $39.99 was more appealing then $49.99...one of his partners just didn't understand that:)  I was trying to explain to him that yes we know that having a personal trainer is worth more then that but a lot of people may just sign up for the smaller gym feel and classes and if the price is high all of those people won't sign up

  • With it being smaller would there be a cap on how many people can join?  I use to belong to a private gym that only allowed X amount of people to belong at a time and once a month you met with a trainer.  At that appointment they built you a workout routine until you met with them again.  I had to pay $150.00 to join, but then it was only about $20.00 a month after that.

Also it never smelled like a gym there.  They also had certain rules to make it more normal people friendly.  No loud grunting or egging yourself on and whether you were male or female you had to have you torso and chest covered.  That was nice.  Also if you didn't show up a couple weeks in a row they called you.

  • Natalie...yeah there is a cap...we would only allow 1100-1200 members compared to the thousands the other gyms have.  We are hoping to do something the doesn't attract all the young 16 yr olds that hang out and socialize at the gym....and the calling if you don't show up for a while is something we do now so we plan on keeping that up.

I like the little things you said b/c they are the things that a lot of people don't like

  • I think either price is attractive for the personal attention that you would receive. I also love the class idea... I like classes!

Good luck.. this is exciting :)
