Today's Question: Dueling Pianos

So, I'm obsessed. I have no idea why.  I love the music, the entertainment, the drinks.  I love that I know the lyrics to almost all the songs.

So have you ever been to a dueling piano bar?  Did you like it?

Would anyone be interested in going to Elaine's Dueling Pianos in Asheville with me, or Howl at the Moon in Charlotte?

It's sort of a dream of mine to have enough people interested in going to rent a party busy or something sometime.

Replying to this post does NOT in any way express your interest in my party bus of piano fun :)  Maybe someday I'll do the research and then make a post about it haha.

Re: Today's Question: Dueling Pianos

  • Oh my gosh- YES!  I love dueling piano bars.  When we lived in Memphis we used to go to Pat O'Brien's a lot, and they have one...which made Pat O's my favorite bar.  There is still one in Memphis- Silky O'Sullivans, but I don't like it as much.  To be honest, I've actually had fleeting thoughts of opening one here if I ever were to open a bar/restaurant.  I just love singing along to those songs.

  • I have never been to a dueling piano bar but it sounds like it would be a lot fun. I might have to look into the one in Charlotte sometime.

It's a ton of fun.  The one in Charlotte is a lot different than Asheville.  Charlotte is more like a college bar.  A lot of obnoxious really really drunk people, and the musicians are tip whores.  It's a loud party atmosphere.

The one in Asheville is at the Grove Park Inn.  The clientele is much older.  It's just a totally different demographic.  The one in Asheville can get rowdy though, especially this past Saturday night it was like the perfect balance of party atmosphere and old rich people haha.

We enjoy both.  There is a cover in Charlotte, but sometimes they'll have a free buffet or whatever.  Drinks are about the same price at both places.  There is no cover in Asheville.

We generally go to Asheville more often.  Mostly cause DH isn't a big partier and he's more comfortable with the atmosphere at Elaines, and also we've gotten to know the pianists in Asheville (the same two always play, then every week they have a guest player,) so it makes it extra special for us when the musicians recognize us and play our requests ahead of others that came in with bigger tips :)

  • I'm really feeling like I want to go to Elaine's now!

Oh, and if I do ever round up the money to start my own piano bar, I will definitely call you to do the PR.

Haha awesome!  You could totally do private parties for like corporate events and stuff too.  There could be a lot of money just in the private parties/entertainment and catering.

So seriously, if people are interested, I will call around and see how much a party bus or something would cost.  DH drove us home on Sat because he rarely drinks, but even without drinking, by the time we got home around 3 am he was SOOO beat.  It'd be nice to have someone else do the driving haha.

  • I've actually never went, but I would be open to trying it.
  • I also want to go to Elaines now since I am not much of a partier.

  • I've never been, but it sounds interesting!

There is an example of a dueling piano bar.  I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love getting a couple drinks in me and singing along!!

All the music is dictated by request, there are request slips you fill out etc.  People request some pretty funny stuff, (Ice, ice baby, etc) along with tons of classics.

You might want to go to Elaines first anyway... then if you like it try howl at the moon.  For us, howl at the moon always is a more expensive night, we never hear our songs get played, etc.  It's still really fun and a good party atmosphere, but I'd see if you even like the dueling pianos concept first.

  • I've been to howl at the moon in Orlando when I lived there during college. Those types of places are so much fun!!
  • I've been to one in Boston a couple of times, and it's always fun! I'd be up for going sometime!
