Moving to NH...need recommendations

Hi Everyone!

My family and I are going to be moving to NH.  We currently live in MA and are coming up on the end of our lease and looking to move....north!  we moved here about two years ago from IL and don't know much about the area.  We have a 10 year old who will be going into 4th grade so I'm looking for a town with a decent school district, that isn't too far from the MA state line since my DH works in Boxborough, MA.

I'd love to live somewhere with sidewalks Stick out tongue if that's possible

Thanks for any help and/or advice you can give me!

  • Are you looking to rent or buy? I just ask because we recently bought a house in Litchfield and love the town - but I don't think there are many rentals here. Great small town, with sidewalks :) and parks, not sure about how the schools are b/c we don't have kids (but I heard the elementary is the worst of the three schools, but it looks like yours wouldn't be there for long!). I grew up in Merrimack and loved it there. Both are near the MA border. Good luck!

  • Thanks for your reply!  we are looking to rent
  • Hampton, and Northwood both have good schools....I would rec. Dover, but I have not been too impressed with some the stories I hear about Dover High school.  That is about all the knowledge I have about schools here since my son is only a year old.....

  • Newton NH is really small and has some nice neighborhoods and is on the MA line.

  • I recommend the seacoast area of NH (Exeter, Stratham, Brentwood, Portsmouth.)  All have great school systems.  I also recommend Hooksett.  Great small town with great schools. Keep us all posted!

  • We crossed the border about 2 1/2 years ago and LOVE it.  We bought a house in Windham, NH (exit 3 off 93) and it is a GREAT town.  Very low key, very "townie."  We don't have any children, though our realtor kept raving about the school system when we were looking and I've heard good things.  They just finished building a brand new HS and it's grand opening is this academic year.  There aren't any sidewalks, my guess is b/c it's a small town.  Very little in the way of commercial businesses - though there is a Shaws.  Mostly mom and pop shops.  There is a paved rail trail though where you can walk, run, bike, and Cobbets Pond (w/a mini beach), Griffin Park, all great community places.  I work in North Reading, MA (right off 93) and the commute is great.  Takes 25 min. w/o traffic and about 40 min. w/normal traffic.  It's the perfect compromise between NH and MA.
  • I moved to Derry when I was 9 months pg 10 yrs ago- I had never been here, and never planned on staying, but I LOVE IT.  The schools are fantastic, particularly the high school.  My 10 yr old goes to a brand new elementary school where the principal was just name Principal of the Year for the state!  We walk everywhere, thanks to the new sidewalks put in last summer in our neighborhhod.  This summer they just paved the "rail trail" which is miles of walking/biking, and recently a "splash pad" (a no-depth water park) opened up too.  Neighboring town of Londonderry and Windham are also great.  Derry is only about 15 minutes to the border.  Good luck!

  • I live in Goffstown which I really like or New Boston which is right next door to us.  We are only 10 minutes away from Manchester, but its a nice little small town thats actually enjoyable.
  • Hi, I'm new to the nest, but saw your post and wanted to help, I'm renting in Bedford NH right now it is a really nice town and I am living at Heritage on the Merrimack, it is a nice community with a trail behind the apts that is great for walks.  HTH
  • Nashua isn't bad and not too far from Boxborough which actually where I got married.  I am not certain how the school systems is since I have no children but I believe there are certain ones that are better than others.  Litchfield has a good school system from what I have heard and wouldn't be too bad a commute to Boxborough.  You'll definitely want someplace with easy access to Rt.3 and 495 since those would be the best roads in and out of Boxborough in terms of commuting.  HTH
