Touring Virginia

Hello ladies:

I am originallly from NOVA, lived in Richmond for four years and will be coming home to visit family in October.  I want to show my DH Virginia.  Last time he came with me we did the DC thing, this time I want to show him the rest of the the State, especially since it has such a different culture to NOVA.  Any suggestions of where.  We were thinking of a little road trip.

I am pleased that it will be the beginning of fall with apple season and was thinking of staying in a cabin in the mountains a few nights and going to Richmond a few nights...just trying to get ideas.

TIA

  • Stuart's Draft and Sherando Lake are wonderful places to stay during apple season.  Google cabins for really cozy options.  If you haven't been, Luray is nice, check out the Luray Caverns for the best caverns on the east coast.  :o)   If you are wine people, drive down 81 from DC area and you will see a ton of signs for wineries; my personal favorite in the Luray area/outskirts is Fox Meadow.  Oh, and on the other side of the mountain chain, Lexington is gorgeous and has the Natural Bridge to offer, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.  There is a KOA campground nearby - and the do have "cabins" on site - just a place with a bed to sleep in with the comfort of AC and heat if needed but community bathroom.

You know Richmond's treasures I'm assuming since you lived there for 4 years.

Down in the Tidewater area you've got Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.  A drive along the scenic Colonial Parkway is practically a must.  If you're in the area before the end of October, Busch Gardens is open for your amusement park thrills. For nightlife fun, Virginia Beach is notorious for having something for everyone.  Want something quieter?  I suggest Sandbridge area with False Cape Backbay to offer beautiful sunsets.  First Landing State Park, Ft. Story with the lighthouses.  Norfolk's Granby St. also offers a wonderful selection of local cuisine, bars and lots of weekend festivals at nearby Town Point Park.

    Have fun!!

  • We love Shenandoah and have stayed at Sky Meadows Lodge before - not too rustic and beautiful views. Also, if you like to hike do Old Rag Mountain, its fun to climb on the rocks and the view from the top is gorgeous.

We also like Charlottesville and to walk around the UVA campus.

Williamsburg is fun - outlets, Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are my favorites.

We live in Fredericksburg and take vistors to the battlefields and sometimes rent a canoe and go down the Rappahannock River.

When we go to the Richmond area we go to Short Pump Town Center and Maymont Park.

Also, we went to Mount Vernon at Christmastime and loved it. I've been told Monticello is even better.

    Have fun!

  • Abingdon, VA is a nice area to visit. Around Christmas the town is decorated beautifully and the Martha Washington Inn is supposed to be a nice place to say (and is historic as well). The shows at the Barter Theatre are wonderful (all the ones I've been to were good and the same is true for my family members). It's fun to walk around the town and go into the little shops and antique stores, etc...I'd say it'd be a good 2 day or so trip. There are also some museums and other historical stops nearby if you're interested. :)
