FL Nestie w/questions

DH and I are considering a move from Florida to Portland. My immediate family lives in the Bay Area of CA which we cannot afford. However, I have several aunts and cousins in the Portland area. We would still be able to have family around. I still had a few questions:

-How are computer jobs in the area? Is is difficult to locate positions?

-How's the housing market? Should we went the first year there. What are areas in Portland we should consider? I've been searching on Craig's list and don't know where to begin.

-Any chance Oregon has a publicly funded virtual school? In Florida, we have Florida Virtual School.

Thanks for your input. I know it's an out of the blue request from a stranger.

Btw... I know that Portland is quite a drive away from San Francisco. But it's on the same coast which is a lot closer than our current location.

Re: FL Nestie w/questions

  • We get a lot of "out of the blue" questions about moving here from strangers looking to move somewhere less expensive than California.

See my bio for information on jobs & neighborhoods.

Re: A publicly funded virtual school. I've never heard of one and since Oregon is suffering from massive budget issues that affect schools, roads and everything else, I'd be shocked if we have one.

  • Your Bio is amazing! That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for. If we end up in Oregon, I owe you a glass of wine!

Do you know of a particular neighborhood in Portland with older townhomes/houses? We would definitely want to rent for a year before buying. Thanks again!

  • I'm no help. But I just wanted to say I love your screename :)

I commute to San Fran 2 days a week. The hour and a half flight is much nicer (and more affordable) then treking from FL.

    GL with your move!

  • Oregon actually does have a Virtual School. I just forget what it ?is called, but have a friend who teaches through it. He always calls it the Academy.
  • I don't have any answers to your questions..as we have only lived here a year...but just get ready for a HUGE adjustment...coming from Florida life...as far as the weather goes...lol...my husband and I were both born and raised in Florida and finally left last June...June-October were nice..but the last 6-8 months have been crappy...and cold...and no sun...blah!!!  BUT we did get to snowboard every weekend for like two months...so...its not ALL that bad...just a huge adjustment from always being warm and sunny in Florida...so what part are you from?? we lived in the Tampa area :)
