Apartment hunting in Charleston!

We're waiting to find out if it's "official" but we could be moving to Charleston in the next 2 months.  I'm looking at apartments and compared to Minnesota they're all gorgeous and amazing to me, so I need your help.  Which areas are best to live in and does anyone have any specific recommendations?  These are the few I've saved that I like:

Ingleside Plantation

Reserve at Wescott Plantation

Barony Place

Plantation Oaks

  • Have you been to the Charleston area before?  It's amazing here... well most parts!

There are a lot of factors you should consider when finding what area you want to live around here - distance from job, surrounding area, etc...  I live in Mt. Pleasant and LOVE it.  I am not really familiar with any of the places you listed.

Also, I wanted to suggest that you also look into renting a condo, townhouse or a house.

I would love a condo or townhouse.  Any suggestions?  DH is Coast Guard so we'll live near the base and then I'll find a job when I get there as an RN (at least I hope!).

  • Will your DH be on the Weapons Station or the AF Base? My DH worked on the Weapons Station, and we lived in North Charleston, very near Goose Creek, so he wouldn't have a tough commute.  (When choosing a place to live in Charleston, you have to take traffic, which can be horrendous at times, into consideration. They are currently working on I-26, so hopefully some of that traffic will be alleviated somewhat.) We had a house in the Park Hill Place subdivision, and we loved it.  There were often a lot of houses for rent in our neighborhood.  I also lived in the Atlantic Palms apartments, and really liked them.  If you are looking at the North Charleston area, I personally would stay west of Northwoods Mall.  Going down Rivers Ave. the other way starting around Ashley Phosphate down to Dorchester, etc. can get kind of shady.  Hanahan and Goose Creek are also nice areas, if you want to stay close to the N. Chas. area.
  • Just looked up the apts you listed. Ingleside looks really nice! These are relatively new and down the street from Atlantic Palms where I lived.  Good choice! I love this area! So close to the highway and shopping. I'm personally not a fan of Wescott Plantation (there has been a lot of trouble in the news with the houses there, so I wouldn't be surprised if the apts were crappy construction too). So, Ingleside gets my vote! :)

He's Coast Guard, so I'm not sure which base yet.  Thanks for all the info, I'm also in love with Ingleside so I hope we can get somewhat of a deal!

  • Do any of you know the Summerville area?  DH found an apartment called The Tradition at Summerville and we're in love.  It's right off I-26 I believe and heard that highway is under construction- but hopefully will be better by October?

Summerville seems nice, but it is too far out of downtown for my liking. Not sure how you feel about close proximity to downtown Charleston.

Er, construction tends to take a long time- I'm not sure I'd hold out that a freeway would be "all done" 2 months from now.

  • I lived in Charleston for about a year and just fell in love with it.  I hope that you get in there.  Good luck house/apartment/townhome hunting, I lived right down town on King Street in student housing..so I can't be much help with what to recommend...but I am sooo jealous of you living there! :)

    Good luck!

  • I'm not going to comment on the apartment communities that you mentioned, because I work for  a division of the company that owns 2 of them. But I did want to say that the problems in Wescott were limited to one particular builder and are 1,000's of houses in Wescott built by nearly every builder in the area, the apartments there (which I have no affiliation with btw) are brand new and not built by the same company as the houses that had all the problems.

As far as the distance issue, I live in Summerville and work downtown and really traffic isn't as bad as people seem to make it out to be. It takes me about 45 minutes to get to/from work when there is traffic, when there's not I can make it in about 30 minutes. I work with people who live it Mt. Pleasant and it takes them the same amount of time.
