Where do you go to buy shoes that has a really knowledgeable staff? I need new athletic shoes and I've had trouble in the past finding something that doesn't cause some sort of discomfort when running. I need someone who can tell me what I need for the shape of my feet and the activities I do. Any store recommendations?

Foot Traffic or Fit Right NW. Both are excellent places. I haven't purchased shoes myself at Foot Traffic, but I have bought 2 pairs of Brooks at Fit Right. They record your running/walking on a tready and make recommendations based on what they see you doing. They follow up with you 30 days after your purchase to make sure that you're still happy. HTH
We used to go to Fit Right NW on 23rd but didn't have the best experience with recommendations (hey, the return policy worked out well though).
Give Portland Running Company a shot (SE Grand), pretty big selection of shoes/equipment, staff is great. If you're looking into running shoes (which, technically if you're a beginning runner, is the only equipment you need to buy other than socks), don't sweat the cost too much (expect about $100/pair). Should get shoes that work with your feet/gait versus for cost/look, it'll prevent problems in the long run. Good luck!
