Grocery Stores

Hi, I'm moving to Suffolk County in a few weeks and am wondering which grocery stores are in the area.  I know they do not have my favorite upstate store so I'll need to find a new one.

Re: Grocery Stores

  • well, there's alot...it really depends on what town you're in....but i usually go to super stop & shop and once in a while king kullen...

oh and btw...walmarts on the island really suck.  they are not anything like the ones upstate or out of state.

  • you may see a Waldbaums every now and then.. and an occasional pathmark-- but I agree Stop & shop is prob your best bet :)
  • Thanks Ladies!  I'm near Port Jeff.
  • Even though I live in Riverhead, DH works in Mt. Sinai and lived in Pt. Jeff.  It's absolutely worth it to go to Trader Joe's in Lake Grove.   That's about 10 minutes from 112.  For meats, use a butcher or there's a Waldbaums on 347 (about a block from 112), but the Stop & Shop in Mt. Sinai is much better.  S&S is huge, and always clean.  The produce section is fantastic.

  • we just moved to Setauket (a town over from port jeff) -- there's a Waldbaums on 347 and Arrowhead Lane, and there's a Super Stop & Shop on Pond Path (a few lights West off 347).  I've been to both and the S&S is much better.
  • Are there any IGA's out that way?  Personally, the Super Stop and Shops I've been in STINK!  They are just more a pain in the butt than they are worth.  Then again, 99% of the time, I go with the smaller, more "personal" shopping experience (hence the IGA suggestion), just to get away from the masses and headaches.
  • BTW, Long Island overall, has pretty TERRIBLE grocery stores, compared to other areas of the country, so just prepare yourself for the worst.  It's one thing I was VERY happy to leave behind when i moved off LI.
  • I live near port jeff and I really like the king kullen on 347. I also go to the stop and shop as well.
