Visiting Portland

Hi Ladies,

I hope you don't mind my recent posts on your board.  I posted below about Portland Spirit and again, thanks for the rec.  We're doing the Heart of Portland tour on Tuesday.

Can you all recommend any must-see places or day trips?  Also, any local restaurants you'd recommend, local bars, etc?  We're here today - Wed afternoon.  Today we experienced the Bite of Oregon and are staying at a hotel very close to that.  We'd love any recommendations for things we should do, places we should see, restaurants we should try, local bars, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Tiffany

Re: Visiting Portland

  • Since you're staying downtown, I'll give recommendations within walking or light rail distance.

Pearl District--fun restaurants, bars, shopping, parks. Very hip and young crowd.

Portland Chinese Gardens--also in the Pearl District, I hear it's gorgeous.

Powell's Books--fantastic bookstore, huge selection, you could easily break off and each spend 3-4 hours.  Very close to Whole Foods and other great restaurants and coffee shops.

Portland Art Museum & Oregon Historical Society on the Park Blocks downtown, close to Portland State, which is a nice campus to walk through.

Jake's Grill--delicious biscuits at breakfast, gorgeous murals in the lobby.  Good for dinner too.

Mother's Bistro Restaurant--downtown, great french press coffee, I'd go for breakfast.

For downtown shopping, I'd try Nordstrom (fantastic customer service), Columbia Sportswear, both are local/PacNW companies.  No sales tax, so lap it up!

I'd ask the concierge desk at your hotel for specific directions and recommendations too.  Hope you have a great trip!

  • I agree with some of the above, and I'll also add in, do you have a rental car?  The drive to Multnomah Falls is TOTALLY worth it, the falls are gorgeous!

Portland Chinese Gardens--also in the Pearl District, I hear it's gorgeous.  It is beautiful!  About $8 a person to get in, takes you about 45 minutes to walk all the way through, bring your camera this is a beautiful place to take pictures.

Powell's Books--fantastic bookstore, huge selection, you could easily break off and each spend 3-4 hours.  Love this store, if you like books you will love it.

Jake's Grill--delicious biscuits at breakfast, gorgeous murals in the lobby.  Good for dinner too.  I have to say, I think Jake's has gone down in service lately.  DH and i used to go there all the time, and we just went a few weeks ago, and weren't impressed.  The crab cocktail is still delicious.

Mother's Bistro Restaurant--downtown, great french press coffee, I'd go for breakfast.  Yes, go for breakfast, it's delish!!!  They make a great Bananas Foster that's not on the menu!

The Portland Spirit tour we're taking tomorrow called Heart of the Gorge goes right by the Multonomah Falls so we'll definitely be seeing that.  Thanks!
