quebec city!

hi all! I'm taking a cruise that starts out in quebec city.. anyway if you have been in quebec city or know anything about it. please help!

1.) how far is the airport to the cruise port?

2.) is one day enough to see the sites? what is a must do/eat?

3.) any suggestions?!

Re: quebec city!

  • I have never been to Quebec City so have no suggestions, but I wanted to say hi and have a good trip!

Oh and the only thing I have heard is that you should probably make sure to have some poutine while you're in Quebec, apparantly it's the best there. Smile

  • I have only been on a day-trip there from Montreal (and it was over 10 years ago), so I can't answer all your questions... However I know we went to the Plains of Abraham so that must be a must-see! Have a great trip!

  • Hi!  Your trip sounds fabulous!  I used to live in Montreal and went up to Quebec City many a time.  I can answer a few of your questions.

    1) I'm not sure how far this is but I'm certain that your airline or the local agents at the airport would be able to tell you and advise transportation if you need it.

    2) You can do Quebec City in a day.  I think it depends on what kind of tourists you are.  I would say ideally that the city is worth a weekend but if all you have is a day, you won't be disappointed.

Here are some things I recommend:

Vieux-Quebec (Old Quebec) which is the the oldest part of the city.  It's divided into Upper and Lower town, the former which sits inside the walls and the latter is at the foot of the hill.  Honestly these areas are just worth wondering.  We usually started at the Parliament building (also pretty!) or the old armory and just walked.  Follow the cobblestones to your fancy.  You will find tons of history unfolding just as you walk if you are into that sort of thing, as many of the buildings are 3-400 years old.

We love to eat at the Restaurant Aux Anciens Canadiens which serves authentic Quebec food in a little 400 year old house.  The food is fabulous and the ambience is really cute.  You can lunch or sup there. I can't recommend it enough.  It is within the walls in the Upper Town.

As for other things to see do:

Chateau Frontenac, the large castle-ish hotel is a must, also a decent place to stay/eat from what I've heard though I can't personally confirm that.

I already mentioned the Parliament buildings and the Citadel which are both impressive.

The plains of Abraham are pretty but I think you have to know the history to really appreciate them for more than just grass, lol.

I also really liked the Musee des Beaux Arts. Gorgeous inside and out!

The Musee de la Civilisation is also a nice museum if you're looking.

We also found this incredible little Ursuline (nuns) museum within the walls of the old city that was one of the highlights of my first trip to Quebec.  It has 350 year old tapestries and gold leafing that the nuns used to do.  I loved it!  It's in the nunnery and tucked away but try to find it if you're interested!

Finally, if you have time and a way to get there and back, I can't recommend Montmorency Falls enough.  It's about 15 minutes out of the heart of the city but the view and photo op is incredible.  You can walk a bridge over the top of the falls or take a gondola down over them into the canyon.  You also get a beautiful view of the St. Lawrence River from up top.  Well worth it if you can manage!

    HTH and enjoy your trip!

  • I was there about 10 years ago...lots to see (and eat!). I definitely recommend doing a walking tour of the old city, lots of history.

    Have a great trip!
