Moving to Eugene, need help!

Hey everyone!

I've lived in NY all my life, but my husband and I are moving out to Eugene, OR so I can go to graduate school.

We just got an apartment that is completely unfurbished. When we move in (around September 13th), we need to scramble to find everything, ie, bed, microwave, table, chairs, nightstand, etc. We've been looking around at stores and man is everything SO expensive! We are both currently unemployed so we want to spend as little money as possible.

Do you have any suggestions? People have said to use craigslist, which we will definitely consider, but do you know of any other way we can get cheap stuff? Any stores that sell used but still nice stuff?

Thanks so much for your help!

Susan & Peter

Re: Moving to Eugene, need help!

  • I am not familiar with Eugene but found this link online from St Vincent de Paul stores: http://www.svdp.us/retail-stores.php

It basically looks similar to a Goodwill which I'm sure they'll also have. It's luck of the draw if you'll find anything decent there.

  • Hi! I'm in Eugene! Most of the girls on here are from Portland, but I'll try to help.

Craigslist is definitely your best bet. We do have second hand stores, but they are usually over priced. And there are quite a few St. Vincent de Paul's and Goodwills.

Which area is your apartment at? Cross streets?

  • We've hit up estate sales and garage sales and gotten some great deals as well.  Estate sales will basically mean the house is selling everything so sometimes you can even get greater deals with a bargain.  We got a great TV stand for $20, a 5shelf bookshelf for $20.  And we got a LOT of stuff from craigslist as well.  Good luck with the move!

  • Sign up on freecycle.com and go garage sales when you get here. If you find one where two people just moved in together you'll score nearly everything you need since they're likely to be combining households. Also check the sale flyers for stores like Target, Kmart, Walmart etc. They have all the off to college sales this time of year and you can find some great deals.

  • Ikea (in Portland) has good deals. I also have good luck at garage sales.

  • Thank you everyone! That was super helpful :) Peter and I are really excited to move to this beautiful state :) and I am very excited that I will be close to the home of my favorite chocolate ever- Moonstruck! Too bad they are soo expensive. But maybe once in a while I will indulge myself :P
  • My apartment is right near University of Oregon. Spencer View Apartments which is through the university's family housing.
  • Oh, but living in Eugene you should check out Euphoria chocolate. It's local to Eugene (whereas Moonstruck is Portland) and it's fantastic. Good luck moving!
  • Sometimes (strange, I know), the students will leave their barely used furniture on the curb. During the Spring and end of summer, you will find all sorts of stuff for sale/free as the students just want to dump and leave. Definitely use CLs and check out HomeGoods, Ross and Ikea (in Portland). Euphoria is amaaaazing.

This is true. I'm actually guilty of leaving living room chairs by the dumpster of my duplex when I graduated from UO.

  • Also guilty of having JUST left tons and tons of stuff out on the curb when we moved out of our college house by campus to our condo way out in west eugene. September is a great time for driving by and picking up free stuff from the side of the road. Very strange, but just how it works here!

  • Awesome! And I'll definitely look into that chocolate :D
  • i just looked at the euphoriachocolate.com website and the truffles look sooo goooood
  • i second the following:

    craigslist

    freecycle

    ikea

DH and I got all of our new furniture from IKEA and spent about $1000 for a new couch, new sofa bed, chair for the living room, desk and a ton of other randoms...we got a lot for what we paid actually. BUT if i did it over again i would have checked freecycle first then ikea :) good luck with your move!

  • I'm obviously way late to the game here, but ditto all the people who said Craigslist and garage sales. There are several goodwills in the area, and a couple of st. vincent de pauls. Then there are the usual walmart and target type stores for inexpensive stuff.?

Other than that, welcome to Eugene! I don't check this board very often, but feel free to page me on MM or send me a PM. I went to UO and live in Springfield now, so I can help you out with directions, things to do, etc.?
