Our potted plants that flank our front door always shrivel up and die. Do you have any potted plants/trees that are hearty? We had junipers and some sort of small ornamental evergreen tree. The front of our house faces the west. Thanks!
Re: Potted Plants recs
My house faces west and currently, I have petunias in a pot. They are thriving. For some reason, they love the sun.
Petunias don't last for very long, so you would have replant something else there.

What you need to do is figure out how much sunlight your front porch gets. There's "shade", "part sun" and "full sun". Literally stick your head outside throughout the day and see how much sun is shining on your pots at 11 am, 1 pm, 3pm, and 5 pm.
Full sun is all the gorgeous flowers, really anything will grow there. My patio is 1/2 shade and 1/2 part sun... I have found that impatiens, begonias, and Hosta's really thrive in the shade, but nothing else will grow.. For the part sun, I love petunias (home depot has the "wave petunias" they are AWESOME and grow huge) and Fuschia's. My full sun area has hibiscus's that are gorgeous.
