Deerfield area info needed

Might be moving to the Deerfield area. Never been before (live in Cali) and when I looked on realtor.com there are many pricey houses built in the 70's that need a lot of fixing up. Why is Deerfield so expensive -- does it have good schools, good town layout, etc?

Are there any areas near Deerfield with newer homes less expensive? Would love any info/experiences you have on the area.

Thanks so much!

Re: Deerfield area info needed

  • hi! i dont post here regularly, but i am from Deerfield, so whats the chances I decided to check out this board today, huh?! The reason Deerfield is so expensive is because its the North Shore of Chicago. its right next to Lake Forest, Highland Park, Wilmette, etc. I went to the high school, and I think it was pretty good, its small too which I personally liked. The town is wonderful, its little suburbia, has a "downtown" with a whole foods, walgreens, barnes and noble, starbucks, and other little shops, which is nice and convenient. I technically live in Riverwoods with my mother, but I think its even a bit more expensive, as you are required to have more land (we share the same zip code though). Im not sure where in DF would have less expensive homes, they are all pretty pricey, but its a GREAT place for children :-)

Any other information, ill be happy to try to help with! you can email me at swimyfishy44@yahoo.com and ill try to answer your questions! Happy hunting!

  • As PP said, it tends to be a very expensive area because it's on the North shore.? The schools are great though and they have a nice downtown area with shops and restaurants.? The cheaper homes are old and need a lot more work.? If you want a new home, it's going to be super expensive.? Nearby cities are going to be just as expensive until you go about 20-30 minutes north towards Grayslake, Gurnee, and that area.??

  • Thanks for the info.... what are the other comparable cities to Deerfield (even if expensive)? Is there a train the runs from Deerfield or nearby to downtown Chicago?

    Thanks!

  • Yes, there should be a train that goes downtown.? Go here for info on trains:?http://www.metrarail.com/

Other cities nearby that are similar to Deerfield are Lincolnshire, Northbrook, Highland Park, Glenview, Wilmette.? Those are all in the higher price range though.?

  • If you are looking for a more reasonable price range, I would suggest Buffalo Grove or Wheeling. Anything on the North Shore is going to have an inflated price range. Both Buffalo Grove and Wheeling have train stations for Metra, which takes you downtown. With Buffalo Grove, the Lake County side has better schools, but the Cook County side has much lower taxes. Lake-Cook Road is where the counties divide (hence the name). Happy house hunting!
  • The North Shore is generally very expensive especially when it comes to the newer homes.  I use to work up in the area and when I was looking to purchase a home, it was definitely out of our price range especially with the amount of work that has to go into fixing up the homes.  I would suggest looking at Vernon Hills and Libertyville which are about 15-20 mintues north of Deerfield but they also have good schools and Metra trains that run into downtown.  Some other communities that I would suggest looking at that are a little closer to the city are Morton Grove, Niles and Park Ridge.  Park Ridge definitely has a better price range of homes, you can catch the CTA into the city, right by all the expressways and they have an excellent school system.  We are actually hoping to move there when we purchase our next home.  Hope that helps.  Good luck with your seach.
