Is anyone in Richmond hiring....

I am so frustrated!  BTW I am new to the Virginia board so "Hi" everyone!  I lost my job in November - NOVEMBER!!!  I sat and tallied how many resumes I have sent out since January and including the 8 I sent out today I am now at 206 resumes!  Are there really that many people out of work in this area that I can't even get a call back or a thanks, but no thanks letter.

This is really starting to strain the marriage a bit also.  DH makes good money, but it can only go so far and we have cut back on everything.  I ran into a friend of ours the other day and he thought we had moved because he hadn't seen us out in so long.  Obviously not a close friend, but still depressing just the same.  I am just so frustrated - I am starting to lose hope.  Is there anyone out there going through this as well or am I the only looser?

OK - self pity and rant are over with - just had to get this off my chest!  Thanks for listening!

Re: Is anyone in Richmond hiring....

  • I'm sorry...that really sucks! What kind of job are you looking for? I have had several friends laid off in the area. I also had a really hard time finding a job and I am a teacher (everyone thinks we have job security).
  • I am a Horticulturalist by trade, but I also have marketing and graphics design experience.  I put myself through school as an administrative assistant, so I have been applying in all of those areas.

Several of my friends are teachers and I know what they have been going through with job security and such.  It is just tough out there for everyone right now.  Sorry I had such a pity party yesterday - I am just so frustrated!

  • Have you ever considered doing wedding/baby announcements, invitations, etc from home with your graphic design? The printed photo type baby invites are big now.
  • I have actually been doing a few freelance jobs for friends and friends of friends.  It has actually been work for trade kind of things.  A friend is starting a new business and in return for some minor repairs on the house I created all his marketing brochures and business cards.  Another friend wanted a neat birthday party for her 7 year old so I created the invitations and planned the party in exchange for the use of her washing machine until we can afford to replace our broken one.  I have put together a few other projects here and there - websites and such, but nothing steady right now.
  • You could always post things on Etsy. I am pretty sure people sell custom orders on there.
  • Ft. Lee is hiring, but the federal process can be long.  Due to the BRAC they are getting tons of jobs at a steady pace.  Some jobs are filled faster than others, it just depends.
  • I completely understand how you feel!  My husband got a job in Harrisonburg which is about 3 hours from our hometown...where I had a job....so I moved thinking I would be able to get a teaching job here but it's been 3 months and I can't find anything!  It is beginning to strain our marriage too.....and I'm getting quite bored!!!  Good luck!!!
  • I'm new to this board too, so "hi"! Teaching jobs seem to be hard to come by around here! I moved here in May and it's slim to none pickings! I totally sympathise with the boredom and the strain... How can I pay off my student loans without income? At least my husband has a great job, but still... at this point, as newlyweds, we really need to get my school bills taken care of! I guess no one wants a 6-12th grade English teacher around here!

Also, as "newbie," I am still unsure of how to put pictures etc in my siggy... Is there a place on the site that I'm missing that tells you how to do that?
