temp agencies?

okay...i've been here for about a month and a half now and have applied to a ridiculous amount of positions and have not been called for one interview. i'm starting to get desperate. i really didn't want to have to go to a temp agency..but i think i might have to...anyone have any good experiences with one out here? if it helps...i have a degree in zoology but my passion lies in non-profit....my last position was working at a mental health non-profit organization...but if i have to i'll use my zoology degree and work in a lab or something.

any suggestions for temp agencies?

Re: temp agencies?

  • I have two friends who go through temp agencies- one uses Kelly (or maybe Kelley) temp and the other uses (I think) Appleone. The one who uses Appleone has been able to find a lot of jobs through there and seems to like it. Kelly got my friend a job but he's only used them for this first job so I am not sure how he likes it or how good it is.?

    HTH!?

  • Sorry if this is long. I worked for Volt for years (though not at a branch) and prior to that I temped through them, Adecco and recently through Employment Trends. Oh, and one other but I can't remember the name.

I have no idea why people don't like the thought of working through a staffing service. I have found awesome jobs both contracting (temp) and direct hire (permenant).

     A few things to know:

The various offices do not share very well. Applying at one Kelly is not the same as applying at another. i.e. if you want a job at Nike, send your resume to the Kelly onsite coordinator at Nike. They have software to share, but for some reason it just doesn't really happen. However you can test and apply at one office then send your resume to the others and tell them in your coverletter that you have recently tested with them.

Kelly has some large contracts that I know of. i.e. Nike and Intel so I imagine they are probably a good one. Adecco and Volt are also great. I don't know much about Employment Trends, but I had a fantastic experience working at Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro through them.

Call to follow up if you apply for one of their jobs!!!!!!!!  They get tons of resume's and getting to talk to the recruiter is priceless especially if you know you are qualified or like many quite over qualified.

They generally have seperate departments for contract placements and direct hires or at least seperate recruiters so if you're working with one recruiter, don't think that another has your resume on hand. Walk in w/ multiple resumes and make sure copies go to both departments.

Thats all I can think of right now. Good luck to all of you and if you have any specific questions that I might be able to answer, don't hesitate to page me.

  • Five years ago I applied at Today's Staffing. I was hired on in the position I temped for in 6 months. Temp agencies usually have temp to hire positions which are great for employers (not great for internal employees wanting to move up usually) because they allow the employers to "try out" an employee before they have to make any form of commitment.

My recommendation is go to the place you want to work at and ask them if they go through a temp agency for some positions. Then apply at that temp agency. Even if you don't get hired on in the position you are in (or even want to) it is a foot in the door. Remember networking is everything.

Also try volunteering. It is another good way to make connections that will help you in your job search.

    Good luck.

  • thank you guys so much for your help!!! seriously! it's hard because what I want to do is work in non profit...do any of you know if there is a temp agency out there who just deals with non profits?

thank you guys, really...i appreciate it! i'm hitting up an agency or two for sure this week.
