Relocating to the Evansville area...

Hi Everyone!

So my husband and I plus our LO might be looking to relocate to the Evansville area from NJ.  We're probably looking into rentals first just so we can get better acquainted with the area.  Are there any neighborhoods/towns that anyone can suggest??  I searched online and found Newburgh--is it close?  Good?  SAFE??  That would be my biggest concern--safety since I have an 11 month old and my husband works nights.

Also--what are the winters like over there?  We're hoping for warmer than New Jersey :)

TIA!

Re: Relocating to the Evansville area...

  • I don't know a lot about E-ville since I live in Indy, but I once new a guy that said you should avoid living on the edges of the University of Evansville campus. He said that campus was safe, but it's adjacent to a rough part of town.

As for weather, it probably won't be much warmer, but maybe a little less snow. HTH!

  • I know of three locals, but they don't really post much on this board - they are over on Pets.

Move along, nothing to see here.....
  • I don't live far very away from E-ville. I live in Vincennes now. But I actually lived there for a few years. And my family all live there still.  E-ville is a great city. Try to avoid the south end of town and down town areas. Other then that you can feel safe in just about all the little burgs around town. Newburg is very pricey for Indiana. Not such much probably compared to housing in New Jersey. But I would highly recommend Elberfeld, Mt. Vernon and Darmstadt are beautiful places to live without the high prices. If you don't mind the drive maybe 20min tops Haubstadt and Fort Branch are really nice little towns with a really good school system. My family all live on the east and north sides of town. If you have any more questions I would love to help. Good Luck!!!

  • My aunt and step sister and her husband all live in Newburgh and love it!! I visit a lot for work and to see them and Newbugh is super cute, safe, and close to the mall, etc... Good luck!
  • I live in Evansville! DH and I live on the East side of town and we really like it. Our neighborhood is safe and fairly quiet. I would, as other people have said, avoid the south part of town if you end up living IN Evansville. The area around the U of E isn't as bad as I've heard it used to be, but it's a lot of college students that want to live near campus so it can be kind of loud and crazy over there.

I also work on the West side of town, actually outside of the city limits, close to the University of Southern Indiana, and some of the areas out that way are nice, too. The family I work for (I am a nanny) live in a really nice subdivision on that side of town, that is far enough out of town that you almost don't realize you're in the city.

I don't know much about apartments in the area, we bought our house when we moved in here, but I have some friends who live in an apartment complex called Sugar Mill Creek and they love it. It's pet friendly and, at least the couple times I've been there, has seemed pretty clean.  Obviously with any apartment complex you might have neighbor issues, but my friends have great neighbors. The company that runs Sugar Mill Creek also runs three other apartment complexes in town. Here is the website:

Newburgh is very nice, but as pp mention, it can be overpriced. I prefer their school system to Evansville's, so that might something to factor in depending on how old your LO is.

Hope this info helps. Feel free to page me on the Pets board or PM me if you want to know anything else!
