as I prep for an upcoming mediation for a case that could have been avoided entirely if it were for a carbon monoxide detector, i just wanted to give a little shout out...
please, please consider installing detectors in your home if you dont already have them - they are just as important as fire detectors and can save your life. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas so you will never know if you have a leak. far too many people go to sleep and just never wake up; its tragic.
At the very least, a detector should be installed near the bedrooms, but the best plan is to have one in every level of your home. Anything gas-powered is a potential source for carbon monoxide including a gas stove, fireplace, water heater, furnace, ect. Also, dont waste your money on the combined fire/CO detectors. Carbon monoxide is a heavy gas that hangs out low to the ground, so by the time its concentrated enough to reach the ceiling (where the fire alarm would be), its too late. We have ours installed at about knee height. If you live in an apartment/rental and can't attach a detector to the wall, they also make portable ones that can simply be placed on a night stand, or wherever.
okay, enough preaching from me - i just care about you all and want you to stay safe! leaks are way more common than people realize

Re: PSA: Carbon Monoxide
Thank you for this. We didn't have a detector for a long time, and just finally got one a couple of years ago.
It's good to hear the part about it being a heavy gas-- I didn't know that and always worried ours was too low (it's plugged into a wall outlet a foot or so off the floor).

its a somewhat debatable thing in the industry...but its generally recommended that they are 18-24" from the ground. no doubt though that a high detector is better than no detector
